Out of the Blue

I finished another Cyber Monday-related project yesterday, much to my satisfaction. I've had to change way too many smoke detector batteries since we moved, and it was months ago I mentioned wanting to swap them out. It took longer than planned, but I was able to pick up a pile of new detectors on sale, so it was worth the wait. The bases of these had fittings to use the pre-existing screws, so installation was a breeze. And the sealed 10-year battery thing is going to be a lot easier to deal with.

I wouldn't call that heartless, I would call realistic. I've never seen stats on it, but I'd be willing to bet a fair amount of money that the average retirement age of single, childless people is significantly lower than that of married people with even just one child, let alone more. It is simply a matter of what you want out of your life, what is "more important" to you. *shrug* I'm satisfied with my choice as I am sure are many married couples with children.

Well, I did say "almost".

As for having to deal with raising a teenager, just one of the many reasons I am happy to be single and childless. Kudos to those who do it and do it well, but not a role I ever wanted to fill.

My "as a parent" made it sound like I was one, not thinking like one.
I expect we'll stay childless. My wife is only 32, so there's time, but also, there are vacations to take. Heartlessly, it feels like the choice is a child, or incredible vacations and earlier retirement.

Be aware they may not actually last 10 whole years, depending on a variety of factors, but the good thing is when the battery does finally die, they start chirping to get your attention.

I don't understand how anyone racks up huge medical bill these days, unless they have zero medical coverage.

44 million Americans do not have any form of healthcare because, quite simply, it is absolutely unaffordable to them.
36 million additional Americans are underinsured and cannot afford better and/or additional healthcare.
Even with adequate healthcare insurance, 1 in 3 Americans would be financially devastated by a medical emergency.

Doesn't seem that hard to understand to me.

"Social Media is Creepy" story of the day.

So, I have a TikTok account for professional reasons. I logged into it a handful of times, and it's under my real name. But I have no friends on it. I follow no one I actually know. And I last used it maybe 6 months ago? I'm too old for TikTok, for many reasons.

I log in today and immediately see friend suggestions. There's someone that used to report in through me. Ok, maybe it grabbed me on LinkedIn? But then there's my cousin. Did it connect through Facebook at some point? I don't even use the same name, exactly, and I do not have Facebook on this phone so that isn't possible (I confirmed in the settings I never linked any contacts or accounts.) Then there's a woman that I went on two dates with 6 years ago. And the handyman that did some work for me 3 months ago?! I never connected with him anywhere. And, lastly, the woman that cut my hair 15 years and 5 states ago.

I imagine they all have me in their contacts, and since a phone number is required, it's asking ME if I want to add THEM, instead of the other way around. Weird. But I guess I know I'm still in my old stylist's contacts.

I hope they weren't First Alert (or any of the other names they are sold under). Our "10 year" alarms lasted an average of about a year before they started flaking out and beeping. They're also very difficult to keep silenced. They're extremely difficult to open too, if you ever want to try and silence them.

On top of that, they're very sensitive to any kicked up dust getting in them from housecleaning etc. Then again, that may be a great excuse not to houseclean.
