The Callisto Protocol Released

The Callisto Protocol is now available on Steam, offering a horror-themed, sci-fi third-person shooter for Windows. Also available on consoles, this is published by KRAFTON and created by Striking Distance Studios, a developer which includes veterans of the Dead Space series. The previously released Official Launch Trailer shows off some of the game's gruesomeness. And this tweet outlines the game's Max and Ultra system requirements. Lastly, this tweet outlines plans for post-release support, including a New Game+ mode coming in February. Here's word on the game:
In this narrative-driven, third-person survival horror game set 300 years in the future, the player will take on the role of Jacob Lee – a victim of fate thrown into Black Iron Prison, a maximum-security penitentiary located on Jupiter's moon, Callisto. When inmates begin to transform into monstrous creatures, the prison is thrown into chaos. To survive, Jacob must battle his way to safety to escape Black Iron Prison, while uncovering the dark and disturbing secrets buried beneath the surface of Callisto. Using a unique blend of shooting and close-quarters combat, Jacob will need to adapt his tactics to combat the rapidly evolving creatures while scavenging to unlock new weapons, gear, and abilities to outrun the growing threat and escape the horrors of Jupiter's Dead Moon.

Plus he's wrong. This issue is something that anyone from QA, Game Manager, producer, dev, literally anyone that tests or plays the game could spot etc etc could have caught.

Shader precomputation is not exactly new. I suspect there was something else going on and they simply diverted resources to the consoles tech since they needed to pass Xbox, Sony whatever certification requirements just to get it out the door on those platforms. PC version somehow got dropped out like this.

If it really is just a matter of some ini settings though, this seems a very unfortunate unnecessary situation..

I've been in game development. This was an easily catchable, rookie mistake. This has nothing to do with difficulty and everything to do with not testing your RCs properly.

Just speculating, I imagine the QA environment probably was configured already with those files.
The build they would test would be different. For whatever reason those environment files did not make it into the PC release package
And the release process across multiple platforms is incredibly complex, file merges, certifications, etc.

If so, that would be a poisoned QA environment. All of your dependencies should come from your RCs barring any dependencies from the OS itself. There should be no difference between what you plan to release and what you are testing at the latter stages of development.

The same thing happened on launch day with Tribes 2 in '99 - the devs all had computers with a specific codec and assumed the users had it too, but most of them did not. Quite a few people on Blues have been in dev, a sloppy release is sloppy. This costs them money, easy money.

I agree. I'm not diminishing the awesome skillsets of developers or even remotely claiming I could ever do it by pointing out that this keeps happening for no reason. Releasing a game too early is bad judgement, not bad coding.

So questions then.
1) Isn't the point of the Unreal engine is because it's fairly "friendly" in terms of tools?
2) Did no one in QA just install the game and not notice this in final QA testing? I mean it is just editing a single text file.....
3) If editing a file makes me a game dev, how much credit do I get for making my own bootdisk's from the old days on a 286/386/486?

Wow that seemed unnecessarily aggressive.

It's not though. I'm tired of the moaning that game dev is soooo easy, here let me edit some lines. Now I'm a Game Dev. I mod games too, modding ini files too does not make me gamedev. Do you realize how hard it is to release a game to run fine on multiple system types simultaneously?

Same thing with "oh I can't trust reviewers, they all lied again." Again with this moaning crap.
That's on the reader if they don't pay attention to the system the game was reviewed on. Clearly the game runs fine on console, and the publisher may have said to release the PC version despite issues.

We just don't know, BUT the PC version should have been delayed.
