Well, despite my predictions to the contrary, I ended up cybering on Cyber
Monday. I mentioned a long time ago my desire to embark on an upgrade path
being derailed by parts shortages. So I'm minding my own business on Monday when I see an RTX 2060 on sale for $179. The way I generally work is to upgrade my GPU
until it's clear the system is CPU bound, and then build a new machine around
the new video card. But this was so cheap it struck me I should just get one as
a stopgap while I waited for the GPU market to shake out further. But some
research suggested that while it could open the door to ray-tracing and other
advanced features, this card was arguably less powerful in some areas than the
GTX 1080 it would replace. But by now I was in the mindset that maybe something
could finally done about my aging system. So I raised my sights and did some
searching. What I came up with was a RTX 3070 Ti. At MSRP! It is quite a comment
on the market that getting a GPU at list price on Cyber Monday constitutes a
bargain. But it did seem like a steal, so I ordered one.
This should arrive today, so I will know quickly enough if this will give the rest of my system a reprieve, or accelerate its retirement schedule. My CPU is a ridiculously old i5-3570K, so the retirement scenario is almost a certainty. I found an outline of this GPU's CPU requirements that actually suggested I was in the right zone, as the 3750K runs faster than 3GHz and has four cores, so it only falls (way) short in the TDP category. GenTeal Tears Moderate drops is what I use. 3 or 4 times a day for dry eyes. My eye doctor recommended it.

The 5600 is dirt cheap nowadays.
That's what I chose when I built my new rig during the pandemic (5600x). It was dirt cheap and it's an amazing cpu! It's very efficient, but I did slap an AIO on it (the goal was a quiet, yet performant machine). It's under 30c when idle and barely goes above 35c when playing games. And the best part is that in a couple years, I can replace it with a (dirt cheap) Ryzen 9 5900x and double the core count without having to buy another motherboard. I know it's last gen, but I think it's better than their current offering in terms of heat. I don't like how hot the Ryzen 7000 series gets. I know they're designed that way, but I just don't like it.
Now I'm still holding out for a flippin' graphics card. Grrrrrr! I think nVidia purposely announces the more practical gaming cards of a series towards the end, hoping that desperate gamers buy the more expensive overkill cards first. IMO, the 1070 is arguably the best gfx card they've ever made. Mine still works quite well in current games after all these years (I just don't get all the rtx bells and whistles), and the fans hardly ever turn on (I can barely hear the fans when playing modern open-world games). I really hope the 4070 has 12GB of mem. I'll be really disappointed if it's yet another 8GB card
Maximum respect for the disciplin here. The longer you wait the better things are! My i5600 is like 7 years old, and the 2080 super was a panic buy because the old AMD card melted. I have no idea how I will be able to afford an upgrade, prices have gone nuts.

Nothing wrong with the Zotac cards. I used to consider them cheap, but in the last several years the build quality has been good, and they also keep costs down by not bothering with so much of the RGB nonsense the other manufacturers put on their cards.
I bought a Zotac RTX 3060 for a friend in Canada when there were still major shortages. I was following a Discord channel that posted when cards became available, and snagged one for a reasonable price on Amazon. I tested the card thoroughly before sending it to him, and it performed well, and had excellent cooling.

blue if you're looking to upgrade your CPU on the cheap, the trick is to dig out your mobo manual, find out the latest gen CPU it supports and buy one of those. as old as your current one is, i bet you could find an upgrade for less than $100. but, you really should upgrade the whole system. load times are getting longer and longer cuz games take up more and more memory, and your slow system bus will have massive load times with modern games. does it even support PCI-E? no way it even has an M.2 slot.

I no longer have to take that medicine, but I still keep some Systane Complete and Ultra on hand. When my eyes are a little irritated/blurry from allergies, that Systane complete is like Windex for the eyes. When my eye's are really irritated, the ultra is the stuff. It's not as thick as the gel, but thick enough that it stays there soothing for hours.

You press your eye up against a soft rubber opening, hold your eye as wide open as possible, there is an LED for you to look at (off center), and then it flashes a photo of the retina. I think I pay $25 for them to use it. The doctor then has a pretty good photo of the retina. He shows me it as he is looking at it. Also they store the old photos for comparisons if necessary -- say to see if anything odd was or wasn't there previously and if so how much it changed. For $25 bucks it is nice to know each year no cataracts are in the early stages of developing.

Well the only way they can properly examine your eyes is by dilating them using drops. Yeah it sucks, everything is too bright for a couple of hours, but it's worth it to make sure you don't go blind eventually.

Speaking of hardware, anyone have opinions on prebuilt desktops brands these days? I am being asked for my recommendations for a budget gaming PC for teen and besides the Steam Deck I am at a loss.
I have been engrossed in other topics the past few years and have fallen behind on brands and specs.

Check out GamerNexus. They bought a bunch of prebuilt budget gaming systems. I think his favorite was the ABS Challenger, but they all had issues, it's just that one had less issues than the others.
Proprietary cases, Proprietary motherboards built only to fit in Proprietary cases and Proprietary psu's.
All combined with cooling that can only be described as the SHITTIEST, unless you like your CPU to start throttling when you open Firefox.

Speaking of eye issues: I had an incident the other day that scared the crap out of me.
Sitting on the porch two days ago, reading my tablet, drinking my coffee, and suddenly there's a big irregular oval in my left's eye vision. I can see fine inside and outside the oval, but the edge looked like thousands of prisms flashing, and I could not see anything through the edge.
Waited 5 minutes and then called my eye specialist who checks me every year for a thin retina condition. I've never had a detached retina, but I have a thin one that might be prone to it, and they have warned me to call immediately if anything strange happens, and this is about as strange as it gets.
From my description, the triage nurse said she thought it was an ocular migraine, which usually passes in 10 - 15 minutes, but they squeezed me in for an emergency appointment next morning for tests.
Sure enough, the problem went away after about 15 minutes with no lasting effects. Spent all next morning having tests done, including photos of my retinas while a dye was injected into my arm.
Good news is that the doctor saw nothing wrong, and wants to see me in four months, but I should call if it happens again because a frequent ocular migraine is a possible indicator of a predisposition for stroke.
Fun Fact: Thank goodness they warned me about it, but I peed day-glow yellow all day. The first pee after the exam, the toilet looked like the inside of a radioactive barrel in Half Life
