Portal RTX Next Week

NVIDIA reveals details about Portal RTX, the recently announced version of Valve's classic puzzle game with support for advanced graphics features, including full ray tracing and NVIDIA DLSS 3. This is now slated to arrive on Steam on December 8th, and will be offered as free DLC for all owners of the original game (which is still on sale for $0.99 for another hot minute or two). There will be a launch party to mark the occasion, and presumably there will be cake. This will include the chance to win some hardware to crush this with, as there will be GeForce 40-series giveaways along the way. This page has all the news on the game and the party as well as system specifications. Here's the previously released World Premiere Trailer and here's a new trailer showing the game in 4K with NVIDIA DLSS 3 enabled and disabled. Here's more on the project:
Every frame of gameplay is upgraded with stunning full ray tracing, new, hand-crafted hi-res physically-based textures, and new, enhanced high-poly models evocative of the originals.

To achieve the stunning new look, Portal with RTX utilizes a suite of demanding graphics techniques that are accelerated by NVIDIA DLSS technology. DLSS 3 allows 40 Series GPU users to get over a 2.8X increase in performance, making the game incredibly smooth and responsive compared to native rendering, while 30 series GPU users will benefit from DLSS 2, bringing the game to a playable experience.

This looks great, and I can't wait to play through Portal again with all these RT effects. However, what's most impressive is Nvidia's RTX Remix software that lets you do this with pretty much any game without having access to the source code.

I didn't think DLSS 3's frame generation would suit shooters due to input latency, but it's absolutely incredible in Wahammer 49K darktide. 50% boost in performance on my 4090 and I can't detect any additional latency.

DLSS 3.0 will make it smooth and responsive.

Well.... smooth yes. Responsive? Yet to be seen. Looking forward to taking an FPS out for a spin with this new tech. And whether the latency "feeling" like 30 FPS while getting 60+ FPS is worth it.

Reminds me that I need to run through Portal again.

Reinstalled Portal in anticipation for the RTX release. I was only supposed to be checking my config. Went in-game to make sure it all felt good...Ended up playing through most of it.

I will wait for DLSS5 coming with the RTX6050 which will be pretty cheap at $1,099 in 4 years. You will get easily 120 fps with this.

Given that my PC with a 3060 can hit 60 FPS@1080p with all options at max including RTX in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, they're either doing something poorly with Portal RTX or Eidos did something amazing with SotTR.

It's neither. SotTR is a much simpler RT solution than this. This is closer to what might be called path traced. It uses ray tracing for all lighting: global illumination, shadows, reflections, indrect bounce lighting, on PBR textures, fog volumes, etc. It's closer to what Minecraft RTX does or something like Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, or the fan projects on github Doom RT and Quake RT.

In short, it's full RT for Portal RTX, meant to showcase tech advancements like they did with Minecraft RTX, thus the higher requirements.

Free for Portal owners? I got Portal for free when it was given away as an educational tool.

Yes. The recommeded specs are higher than I expected, was hoping to hit 1440p 60fps with my 3070. Hopefully with DLSS on balanced it'll do fine.
