Out of the Blue

How do you say FAQ? For me it's never been anything but "fack." But most of the time I hear someone say it they spell out F-A-Q. This seems odd to me, but a little poking around suggests it may be correct. I'm not sure how I'll handle it if it turns out I am wrong. Years ago I corrected my mistaken pronunciation of gib to "jib." And I even try to go by the GIF inventor's counter-intuitive pronunciation of "jif." But a man can only take so much, so this may be a hill I'm willing to facking die on.

Thanks for the concern, but it's misdirected. It's been a crisp, clear weekend around here. We do live near a lake and right on a pond. But we're close to 300 miles from Buffalo as the duck flies. I'm guessing our weather is impacted more by the Hudson River than the Great Lakes.

F-A-Q for a standalone "I'm reading the F-A-Q now". GameFAQs as a single noun as in "Im reading the F-A-Q on GameFax right now". I have never equated Gib as "jiblets" rather Gib as a verb on its own "im gonna gib that mofo"

If I learn I'm pronouncing or doing something wrong, I correct myself instead of insisting I'm right and continue to do it wrong. I initially pronounced GIF with a soft G because I remember from English class that if the G is followed by an I, E or Y, it is a soft G (there are a few exceptions, but I forgot what the rule for those are). Then I heard people saying it with a hard G and started saying it that way because I thought I was saying it wrong. Then when I learned the creator intended for it to be pronounced with a soft G, I went back to pronouncing it the correct way.

There is no rule that says acronym pronunciations have to use the sounds of the words they stand for, and the majority of acronyms don't. If you think GIF should be a hard G because the G stands for Graphics, then you're pronouncing a lot of other acronyms wrong, like NASA, SCUBA, ATM, LASER...

As for gib, the same as above, I originally pronounced it with a soft G until I heard others saying it with a hard G. Gib isn't an acronym, it's short for giblets, so when I learned that I went back to soft G.

As for FAQ, I say it both ways depending on who I'm talking to, although I rarely ever have to say it out loud. In my head I say "fack" when I read it. All of my tech friends say "fack" as well. I think the last time had to say it out loud was when I was in ISP tech support and then I spelled it out F-A-Q and told them what it stood for.

With rock-solid justifications!

Fack: it's a play on "just the facts, ma'am."
Gif: as another here said, the G represents "graphic" -- hard G. The creator employs flawed reasoning.
Jib: (I honestly don't know how anyone gets this wrong) it is short for "giblets" (little meat/guts pieces).

And while we're at it, I don't care who may have "invented" WASD, ESDF is superior (the f nub; more keys available).

I took the Pepsi Coke challenge at a mall once. If you can't tell the difference between Pepsi and Coke it really doesn't matter but Pepsi is sweeter and most people are probably going to say ooh I like the sweeter drink when in all actuality they prefer Coke.

I've only heard "fack" previously. F-A-Q seems awkward. The consensus amongst the tech people I know is "jif". I only heard the soft-g "gif" begin to be used in the last 10 years or so. I've heard both gib and jib. "Jib" is much more commonly used.

Off topic: Wife and I watched Top Gun Maverick last night on BluRay (I rarely waste money on BluRays unless it's a movie that I think will benefit from it). If you can check your brain at the door (wife loves it when I yell 'That's bullshit!' Several times during a movie) it was actually a very entertaining and fun movie to watch.

Full disclosure: I never saw the first movie, but it didn't make any difference. I've seen enough clips from it to understand all the references that were made.

Just don't get me started on the absurd James Bond Super Villain base that was the mission objective.

IMHO, it doesn't matter whether "the creator" of the three letter world pronounced it differently, because most people will just pronounce it based on how it is spelled. That is just how pronouncing acronyms and other small words works.
