Out of the Blue

The special logo now gracing our masthead in our desktop view is for SiN, the first-person shooter released by Ritual Entertainment in 1998. I set up a spreadsheet with our collection of logos and added release dates from Wikipedia to help remember anniversaries. Based on the SiN article on the Wiki I entered November 9th as its release date. Back in those days games were sold in these things we called stores, and press releases did not generally accompany launches. But it's clear from our news archive that SiN hit North American shelves well before the ninth. It looks like it was as early as November 3rd, and it was clearly widely available by the fourth. Anyway, I was determined to commemorate the game's anniversary today, so it's just off by a few days. SiN was an extremely fun game that advanced the shooter genre at the time. It even had a Blue's News Easter egg! It feels like it ended up being overshadowed by Half-Life, which, speaking of anniversaries, went "gold" on this date in 1998. As always, hats off to Walter "2" Costinak for the specialized logo, and thank you to Scott for fixing it for our current format.

Speaking of Half-Life, I stumbled across this short, fan-made video yesterday.

Half Life 3 meets Portal

Apologies if it's been posted already, I did a quick search and scroll, but didn't see anything.

Regrettably I was overly critical of SIN, but in my defense the initial release was extremely buggy for myself and friends. Paperbag
I remember wanting the throw, my pentium pro out the damn window, 45 to 60 second load times were unheard of att at least to our group.

It was an incredibly creative, masterfully written and acted, while being very innovative. Lighter

I hope Nightdive didn't bite off more than they can chew with their SiN remaster plans. I was excited when they announced it but that was ages ago.

The maps were more complex than usual in that an action done in one map could affect the layout in the following map. It was pretty cool at the time. As was the localized body damage. Made headshots feel great.

There's a Black Mesa road sign in one map. It is laying on the ground covered in sand.

SiN was awesome! This is another one of those classics my Dad somehow missed during the 90s. I remember growing up I would see SiN: Episodes on old Steam and wanting it really bad (the physics papertowels blew me away... lol) but I finally got to play and beat both 10 years ago. Even played some of the MP with a friend recently, that gravity mechanic and upside down level is insane! Almost like Prey before it came out. Reminds me that I still need to finish Wages of SiN...

The fate of Ritual is incredibly sad, and being brutally honest, this game has not been treated well. With buggy/flawed re-releases and that "remaster" looking like some horrible scam considering the screenshots were just the first level with generic AI upscaled textures, but it has never come out (and I hope it never does). Even when SiN came out it was getting hit with bad luck, such as that awful BIOS killing virus infecting some demos of the game. SiN and Ritual deserved a lot better.

I never noticed the Blue's News easter egg, but I didn't really know about BN back then, so next time I play I'm gonna have to look out for this! I know I sound like a broken record, but thanks again Blue for having such an amazing archive that we can still see a screenshot from 24 years ago!

Edit: Wrong name, gah

Sin was dissapointing for me, when it came out and the few times I replayed it.
But congrats to all that enjoyed it.

Fondly remembered for its modern, realistic environments, which at the time weren't that common as FPS tended toward scifi or fantasy/pre-modern worlds. Some iffy shooting mechanics--shotgun had the same spread as a pistol--but with cutting-edge aspects like ... headshots! Will check it out again for the nolstalgia value.

I remember picking up SiN back when I was trying to get every FPS I could find on PC. I had already had my Half Life fill, Kingpin, Duke Nukes, Quakes, Unreals, etc. and needed more.

I recall seeing this in the bargain bin and was like, well, here's one I haven't tried yet... Was pleasantly surprised. I believe Steam has a Nightdive version of it but I haven't cared enough to grab it. Despite all the classics I've played and re-purchased once remastered, SiN isn't one I really care to revisit.

Love how that 24 year old screeshot is still recognizable as Blue's.

Baby Laugh-a-Lot was creepy but then Remco made a lot of weird products during their run. Like the Star Trek Astro Cruiser which was essentially a tank and never actually showed up in the series.

The rest were clearly products of their time and not at all creepy when viewed within the context of the culture of their specific times.
