I don't think tv needs to "respect" source material, as it's a different medium and can't convey ideas in the same way, so changes are needed.
But it was just boring. And the changes to the beauty and the beast episode took anything interesting from the story. I quit after that episode. Just didn't see much worth returning to. Oddly, my wife, who enjoyed S1 less than I did (I saw potential more than quality) stuck with it to the end without me.
