Out of the Blue

Well, Andor has premiered, and just to mess with us, the reviews of the Rogue One prequel are among the best for a Star Wars project since, well, Rogue One. Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in! Oh well, that's on me. No one's going to Force me to watch.

Not disagreeing with you as to how it was pronounced on the show (including Commander Data's name), as well how some / many (?) might pronounce "data" in reality.

Doesn't really bother me, either way, though I would always say "DAH-tuh" for the term, and "DAY-tuh" for the ST:TNG android's proper name.

You heard both pronunciations in your head when you read that sentence.

I agree; the correct way is "Data is".

Some words are always plural, and you can't really have a singular quantity of it. For example: "snow". You would say "The snow is white", not "the snow are white". An individual piece of snow is not "snow", it is a different word. Same with data. An individual piece of data is not called data, it is called a bit. The collection of all the bits forms a singular "data", just like the collection of all the snowflakes forms a singular "snow".

I'm just imagining Blue being like... "the rain are wet" and I can't stop laughing.
Well, "data" is actually the plural of "datum", which is a Latin word that isn't used much in English. So "data are" is technically correct, but it's more formally used in certain contexts. In colloquial usage, it just doesn't sound right, at least to me.

Yup, what Nullity said.

Same thing goes for "bacteria". To be more specific, "datum" and "bacterium" are considered neuter-gender nominative singular words in Latin, and thus their plural in that context are "data" and "bacteria", respectively.

Disclaimer: Took 5 years of Latin way back when, and am very rusty with it.

I know that this is grammatically correct, but it just looks and sounds completely wrong, I don't like it. My biggest grammatical pet-peeves (aside from the simple stuff like people using the incorrect form of "they're" or "you're"):

1. When ending a sentence with a quote, the period is meant to be inside the ending quote. But this makes no logical sense to me, since most of the time the period isn't actually part of the quote, but is ending the entire sentence. I refuse to do this (unless the quote itself includes punctuation).
2. When an oxford comma is not used. Without it, ambiguity can often be unintentionally introduced, as well as just taking more effort to read. Always use an Oxford comma, people!

I enjoyed most of the new series (except Book of Boba Fett), but, I have to say I really enjoyed the setup/setting/tone of the series so far. Probably what Han Solo shoulda been.
