Out of the Blue

Set a calendar alert: NASA to broadcast first asteroid redirect on Monday (thanks Neutronbeam). Okay, that sounds like a show worth watching. Of course I'm sure there are some Bruce Willis fans hoping this will fail, necessitating space drillers. But succeed or fail, this feels like one of those moments where the present meets the future.

After reading about it I can only assume Trump believes by playing the completely ignorant idiot it will save him somehow. Then again, it is difficult to believe he isn't a completely ignorant idiot. Alas, in most legal matters ignorance is not a defense. Besides, IIRC I've already read statements from people testifying to having warned Trump his handling of classified materials...

Donald Trump had a very bad night. Not just the NY lawsuit, but the court of appeals basically said Trump has no rights to the documents seized in the raid, they are the property of the people of the United States, and he can go pound sand, and strongly rebuked the judge.

My read is that even the special master is now out of a job. So much for Trump's usual tactic of slowing down the investigation.

And if you haven't seen it yet, the Donald claimed, last night, in a Hannity interview, that he can just declassify documents by using his mind.

"These are not the documents you are looking for...."

Fehmarnbelt Tunnel will be the world's longest immersed tunnel.

That immersed tunnel is pretty cool:
1. Dredge
2. Lower tunnel section into trench
3. Bury tunnel section

I've never heard of anything like that before.
Awesomel Can't wait to see the episode on one of those engineering shows about this project.

Vladimir Putin’s defense minister sent a clear message to the people of Russia: their country is at war not just with Ukraine, but with the entirety of the West.

I imagine there's more than one A-10 warthog pilot chomping at the bit to strafe Russian hardware and personnel in Ukraine just for fun.
By now even the average hardline Russian realizes that the math doesn't add up. You've been in Ukraine for over 6 months and claim to have lost less than 6000 troops but need 300,000 more.

i really wish someone with influence would say this out loud - putin isn't just at war with UKR - he's made russia the enemy of the world. he keeps blustering on about how he needs more troops to fight the west, but someone needs to say it for all to hear - the west is not your enemy if you don't attack us. if we really wanted to destroy russia we would've done so in the 90s when they were completely incapable of putting up a fight. but he's locked in that cold war us vs them mentality and i think ti's become pathological for him - utterly incapable of thinking in any other terms. he needs to be overthrown, no two ways about it. this war in ukraine is utterly pointless - if he'd negotiated i think they would've happily given russia access to sevastapol and their black sea ports.

The idea of unlimited economic growth is unsustainable.
Eventually we'll hit a physical limit (ie, the planet/our society can only sustain so many people).
We need to find comfort with holding patterns, or even regression in some areas, to just have a realistic view.

Judging by Putin's rapidly declining health, Ukraine probably just needs to hold out for a few more months. I'm not expecting a smooth transfer of power in Russia, though. With all the recent oligarch assisinations, things are already getting real Game of Thrones over there.

I've been waiting for the drone or special forces attack that takes out some huge Gazprom natural gas refinery... no such luck, so far.
