Yep, that 3dfx Voodoo was quite something. 640x480, gorgeous!

I think the current label excludes ppl (non-boomers) for no good reason. I was 8 at the time DOOM came out. It's part of my youth; nostalgic as hell. Call them 2.5/3D Doom Shooters or something. Also, while writing this I asked myself if I really give a shit... 🤣

Quake was released two-and-a-half years after DOOM.

Yeah, I know I'm splitting hairs, but I feel like that 2.5 years was an exponential growth, and I don't think Quake and Doom really feel like similar games, other than perspective. Right now, 3DR is kicking out a few different FPS games, some of which use Build, and some of which are 3D, and they feel very different.

Yeah it's weird now but those 2.5 years saw such a huge shift. Now, that's enough time for a sequel that refines the formula a bit (if that, less creative franchises don't even do this) but at the time, that was huge. Wolf -> Doom -> Quake felt like generational jumps that just don't happen now. Still, I do think that there was a gameplay theme that carried through all of these; fast-paced run-and-gun, before chest-high walls appeared everywhere. Whether a game is Doom's 2.5D or scifi inspired, or Quake's 3D or gothic inspired, I can understand collectively calling these boomer shooters / old school shooters / doom clones / 90s shooters / whatever.

Boomers would have been 40+ when Doom came out. Also, unlike us, none of them would have grown up with video games. I'm sure they exist, but I don't know anyone from my parents generation that regularly plays video games. It's even less likely that they were doing so 30 years ago when PC gaming was much smaller.
The baby boom is generally considered to be 1945-1965. That means the youngest boomers were 28 when DOOM was released in 1993.

Doom is a different generation. There are doom clones still made, but far fewer of them. These are more dramatically updated versions of late 90s and early 00s games than early to mid 90s, and the gameplay differences are pretty stark.

Bring back the label Doom Clone.

What they call boomer shooters for the most part are like Doom, and the label has historically been applied to the genre.

But they're really Quake clones. Dusk and Amid Evil, two of the larger draws, are fully 3D and full of polygons.

Doom is a different generation. There are doom clones still made, but far fewer of them. These are more dramatically updated versions of late 90s and early 00s games than early to mid 90s, and the gameplay differences are pretty stark.

I know I'm splitting hairs, but I still think it's important to distinguish between true 3D and 2.5D, even if the game is just trying to emulate 2.5D.

Does it annoy anyone? Observing that it technically doesn't make sense isn't annoyance.

So the premise being discussed here on a site populated by older gamers is that 30 year-olds were too old to have played DOOM or Quake back in the day?

No? Not sure where you're coming from with this.

Edit: Oh I get it, you mean people who were 30 at the time. I don't think that's the premise, just that they were in a minority compared to Gen-X.

I'm sure Gen-Z will continue to call them "boomer shooters", solely because they know it annoys Gen-X/Millenials.

Isn't it easiest just to call them by the decade they came out? It works fine with music and movies. 70's music, 80's action movies, 90's shooters.
Because we have so many 90s throwbacks that are highly Quake influenced.

Americans and their obsessive need to label and divide everything.

I didn't realize genres and labels didn't exist outside the US. It's a bit disturbing to be finding that out this late in the game.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

While I agree that Americans do this at an extreme level, everything about our culture is extreme right now, it's a species trait in the larger perspective. One that was in full display world wide long before the USA was a thing.

I call them "old-school shooters", although as I type this I realise that's a bit to close to "old school-shooters".

Bring back "Doom-clone", except limit it to actually fast-paced plot-light games rather than any first person game.
