David Braben Steps Down as Frontier CEO

Effective immediately, David Braben is stepping away from his role as CEO of Frontier Developments, the developer he formed back in 1994. GamesIndustry.biz reports the Elite creator will retain his title as president of the company, while chief creative officer Jonny Watts will take on the Chief Executive post. Oddly, the news is not yet reflected on David Braben's Twitter or the Frontier Website, but David Braben's LinkedIn has been updated with the changes. Here's word:
The announcement said that Watts has been key to recent successes at the company, including unaudited record revenue of £111 million in FY 2022.

Braben commented: "Frontier is very important to me, and I am delighted to be able to pass on my CEO responsibilities to the exceptionally talented Jonny Watts, who I know will do a terrific job.

"He has the perfect combination of creative leadership and gaming vision to build on the excellent momentum in the business. I am looking forward to my new role at Frontier, and this change enables me to focus on our longer-term strategic opportunities."

I have not played SC. I have watched a fair number of videos of people playing it. I haven't seen anything which in my mind provides evidence for your statement. That said, to each their own. E:D is certainly getting long in the tooth, and their Odyssey release was a complete mess. I hope SC does eventually surpass E:D, I'd enjoy having another good space game to play. But to my knowledge, it isn't there yet...

It sounds like he wants to step down from the leadership role and responsibilities and get back into the development side of making video games. Something has piqued his interest. The metaverse?

I don't know... "longer term strategic opportunities" sounds more like CEO stuff than dev stuff. It sounds like finding a buyer for Frontier (they are already partially owned by Tencent).

It would be awesome if he would be interested in getting back down to the development level. I have always liked Braben and how he is still this massive nerd deep down inside in spite of the success of Frontier. It has always been a joy listening to him talk about astronomy or the simulation that is driving Elite Dangerous.

Oh well, I wish him the best of luck but it sure sounds like he is simply retiring.

Maybe he wants more time to play Elite.

Know I'm gonna shit for this, but Elite while awesome in it's own time (and a great VR Showcase), they have only had Planet Zoo and the 2 Jurrasic World games. Star Citizen is vastly more fun to play (even with limited content in alpha).

I had a really good time with Planet Coaster.

This guy pretty much made Elite and Frontier Elite 2 (such a massive part of my childhood) all by himself!

I am so happy he is raking in cash! Much deserved

Now that he has publicly supported the move by both complimenting the new guy and talking about how it benefits him.....I can think of no better time to retire myself.
Congratulations! Now you'll plenty of time to tell those neighbor kids to, you know? Shakefist

I hope not but I understand his decision. There comes a point where being the chief sucks and you really miss the days when you actually have your hands on the work.
