Out of the Blue

After explaining our eagerness to see last night's Better Call Saul, our DVR didn't record it. This is a cloud DVR from Xfinity, and when I checked it said we have no upcoming programs scheduled to record. I found this forum thread with users who also lost their schedules. There are a couple of messages from employees saying we may be screwed. But there's also a helpful message from a fellow user. Turns out there's a menu setting to resync the DVR which took care of this instantly. And we were able to watch our show on demand, so no harm, no foul. Comcastic!

Regarding the Petito thing, I suspect the case is gonna end up settled for a much lower dollar amount rather than see the inside of a courtroom. While the police did make mistakes in their investigation according to their own internal audit, their mistakes would have to rise to the level of negligence, which might be a hard sell to the court given the lack of serious injury, no prior domestic complaints and Petito not cooperating with them.

Petito said she hit Laundrie because she was frustrated he was telling her to calm down, the investigation revealed. Once officers confirmed that, they said they were obligated under Utah law to at least cite Petito with domestic assault.

The family has a case and the police did not make the right call.

I would hope the police would arrest those who confess to assault.
I’m guessing that’s not what you meant to say.

The laws in the United States are clear on what the police can do, and that includes arresting both the victim and the perpetrator because sometimes both have assaulted the other.

There’s a reason no one in the United States comes to a gaming forum for legal advice.

Once a victim calls the police or someone else calls the police to report domestic violence, the matter is out of the victim’s hand.
If law enforcement officers believe a crime was committed, they will arrest the alleged offender, regardless of whether the victim wants to press charges.
The victim may contact the prosecutor’s office to inform them that they do not wish to press charges. However, that is the extent of the victim’s power over domestic violence charges.
Only the prosecutor can decide whether to drop the charges.

It all depends on the local laws. In most western countries, if the victim refuses to press charges, or even worse admits to instigating the domestic abuse (which is unfortunately pretty common with abuse victims) there is very little that the police can do. It must suck for the cops too, imagine being a cop and seeing that shit day in day out and being powerless to do anything about it.
You are correct on all counts. It wouldn't surprise me if the police were tempted to start a pool on how long before he hurt her or worse, but had no legal options to insert themselves or divide them.

Obviously it is impossible to be certain, but even if there was some kind of regulation/law/whatever the Utah police could have used to force (making this up and choosing a random amount of time) a 48 hour time out -- and separate the two of them for that period. Had that happened, I suspect Gabby would have rejoined Brian and resumed their trip as soon as she was allowed to.

“We use liquid nitrogen at minus 196 degrees. When it turns into a gas it creates a very strong pressure and we use that pressure to activate a mechanical engine.”

Holy SH!!!!!!!!!!T, that is the most dangerous invention I have EVER heard of. The article doesn't even HINT at the danger.

It works by converting liquid nitrogen into gas nitrogen, which then must be exhausted. If this unit is placed in a room and operated, the nitrogen gas will kill everyone in the room and also kill anyone who comes in to help the deceased. Yes, nitrogen is inert, but if you are breathing a nitrogen concentrated gas you won't get enough oxygen and you will die.

If you operate it outside, you may be able to dodge a bullet. Unless that "outside" area also happens to be in a static-air dead zone where heavy gasses (like nitrogen) can accumulate.

But the worst part is, you won't have any inclination at all that you are dying. It is not suffocation. Quite the opposite, you will likely feel more and more confident and peaceful and content as your brain shuts down. This makes it virtually impossible to detect that you are in danger and take remedial action. At least carbon monoxide poisoning gives you nice headaches and nausea before it kills you. Not nitrogen.

What the every-loving EFF!?
How could nitrogen be bad for you? It makes up almost 80% of the air we breathe!
My statement is parody of global warming deniers and their claims that any amount of CO2 is always good for the environment.

Trae crushes it again

The Gabby Petito suit... from the recordings I saw it seemed to me the Utah police were reasonable. Gabby either didn't realize or couldn't admit to herself that her boyfriend was abusive and a threat to her safety. If anyone saw something in the videos which they think is a "they should have acted on that" moment, please point me to it. Although I suppose I can't blame her grief stricken parents for striking out in whatever fashion they could manage...

Lol, no wires and no electricity. Another "green" scam. Sure, Nitrogen is a byproduct when you separate it from air to get oxygen for hospital use. Oh I wonder how they get the energy to do that? And how much energy is used in cooling the nitrogen down and creating liquid hydrogen? And all of that electricity comes from solar and other green power generation plants. Aha, yeah right. Also what happens when the unit runs out of nitrogen, refill time boys? Get into those trucks and swap the bottles.

What a load of crock. If anyone thinks that this is green tech, they are sorely deluded.

Taking your position at face value I guess it would come down to judges deciding if placing an atmosphere mask (seems wrong to call it an oxygen mask) on a prisoner is "cruel and unusual". Personally, I wouldn't care to guess what they might decide. Over the years judges have fairly frequently made decisions which were completely non-sensical to me.

Edit: Well, here is a seemingly reasonable response on why prisons are not using nitrogen gas for executions. (scroll down a bit to a response from Jon Mixon)
Mixon is a nincompoop.
Since nitrogen is harmless and we breathe it in every day. You don't need a special chamber. Put a simple oxygen mask on the patient's face and plumb nitrogen to it. Any leakage will mix with room air and is safe to breathe. There's already a doctor on duty that checks vitals for all other executions, this one wouldn't be any different.
For his second point: it's safe because once again nitrogen is something we breathe in every day.
His third point is also worthless as there is no additional cost and no need to build a special chamber.
His final point isn't even worth discussing.
After a few breaths of nitrogen the patient will drift off to sleep and never awaken.

The Orville's Season 3 was epic level of quality, even better than ST SNW S1 which wasn't too shabby either.

If they don't continue the serie while the turds that are STD and Poocard continue, something's seriously wrong somewhere with the sci-fi community.
