Out of the Blue

Happy birthday MTV! It was on this date in 1981 that Music Television took to the airwaves, changing pop culture forever. I still have fond memories of working at MTV and VH-1 back in the day. Here's to 41 years of MTV. And, you know, 20 years of music videos!

Here's a brief note to address the ugliness that broke out in the forums yesterday. I want to reassure participants that creating a pleasant, civil environment is a top priority for the message boards. The moderation team here is working eliminating such problems going forward.

Obituary: Nichelle Nichols, trailblazing 'Star Trek' actress, dies at 89.
Obituary: Boston Celtics great Bill Russell, 11-time NBA champion, dies at 88.

Birthday Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

Fooling around with BluesNews "Site Statistics" (what a fine treat to browse !), clicked on the most recent day with most news, found Creston and others, and ... Cutter.

I can't believe the person posting then is the same posting lately, what happened ?
I know the years file us down but what a change.

Here is the thread,

Indeed.

One last time (I PROMISE), I never questioned the decision to ban Cutter. I'm sorry I made it look like I did. I wanted to defend a sliver of his character and did so out of ignorance ergo possibly unjustified. Defending his character and agreeing with the ban aren't mutually exclusive.
What you say is true. He was a contributing member of the community with most of his posts: on topic, relevant, sometimes even inspired. Personally I had many positive interactions with him. It's a tragedy. However, his intolerant and personal attack posts were among the most vicious on the site, and when called out on them, he always doubled down and never thought they needed correction.

Quinn, I think your intended defense of Cutter, surely honest and in good faith, is also motivated by some repeated rejections by many of some of your own postings at other times.
Perhaps a kind of brotherhood in *perceived* persecution as you don't seem to understand the gist of the answers you get.

There is a pattern here for you to consider.
You chose with admittedly partial knowledge to defend Cutter, but with the dubious mechanic of spreading his real blame and irresponsability to others.
Of course, few of us are pure souls, but there are levels.

And then, like in other many occasions, you endlessly try to walk back the general response.
Give it a rest, as a tired father of young children you need it.

I'm kind of surprised at this. I see it used all the time for singular, when the author chooses not to use cis-heteronormative gendered pronouns. As a former English teacher it rankles me. Of course I support gender neutral pronouns and the LGBTQ community, are we so unimaginative that we can't come up with a new one instead of coopting the plural and writing confusing sentences? "The prisoners scuffled with the guard, and they fell down."
As a matter of fact, I had my posting privileges revoked at one site for gently arguing the above. Liberal purity tests can be extremely counterproductive.

It's way more common than just LGBTQ usage.
If you're opposed to it on a language stickler level... then how do you deal with unknown gender online or in just daily dealings.

"Well, I hope they know what they're doing."

"Who called?"
"I don't know, but they left me a voicemail."

Hell sentences like that I'm more apt to always read as singular. They're almost never used to talk about multiple people doing something.

I'm sorry but that is patently ridiculous. No one is a sliver of their character, it comes as a whole. Which isn't to say people shouldn't get second chances. No one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes, I've certainly made my share. That's why you have to consider the whole.

It was a deeply caring comment toward BoP, maybe because of my history with people becoming more and more angry about everything.

As I had not read your comment about me, and because you mentioned me by name in this thread, I went back and look at what you originally posted.

You made an assumption, a poor one, based upon a lack of knowledge of me. Your experience with others was not applicable to me. I mean that in the most neutral way possible. I appreciate your concern.

Let me set you straight. I am neither angry nor bitter. Anger is an emotion that doesn't serve me so I tend to jettison it as quickly as possible and bitterness is a futile state of being because it indicates that one has given up on effecting change. I am, however, jaded and snarky without a doubt.

So, we've cleared that up and we can lay it to rest.

You haven't? I read and hear it often. I use it myself because of it. This is also why I don't really get the pronouns war. Just use they 🤷

@Kosumo, just take my word for it: the "safe space" remark had nothing to do with Cutter being banned. I confused at least one other person though, which is why I explicitely clarified what I meant in a later comment. After that, I felt like carrying over Half Elf's torch redeeming at least a little bit of Cutter's character. Maybe I was wrong to do so, because it was admittedly out of ignorance. It's a tendancy I have toward people who's character gets assassinated, even if it's justified and I'm throwing myself before the wolves.

Let's move on and into this new Bluesnews communtiy chapter.

Words, they mean things.Your ability to “know” what “they” do verges omniscience.

2. gender-neutral way to refer to one person.
lol

You realise this was a criticism of your interpretation, right? Quinn's "they often report posts" comment could apply to a single person and I have no reason to doubt their clarification. I'm no fan of Quinn ("sick to the stomach" over "hurt feelings", yeah ok) but they seem to be right about this detail.

I'm glad Cutter is gone, anyone who breaks the rules so frequently should have been sent packing years ago. I've reported quite a few of his posts, and others like them. On that point, I don't know why anyone would think right-leaning people are moderated more - people who post sexist/racist/etc stuff get posts deleted. I can't imagine why someone who tends to post rather right-leaning viewpoints but who is certain they're not sexist/racist/etc would associate sexist/racist/etc stuff with being right-leaning. Weird.
