Quake 4 Insider Preview

Xbox Wire invites everyone to join the Quake 4 Xbox Insider Preview (thanks Console General). This is described as "an integral part of bringing the game to Windows PC." If you're thinking that Quake 4 came to Windows PC in 2005 upon the launch of the first-person shooter sequel, you'd be 100% correct. So what's going on here is not even a little clear, though we imagine it has something to do with Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax. Here's word to see if you can make sense of what's going on:
Xbox Insiders on Windows PC are invited to preview Quake 4. Originally released in 2005, players lead the invasion of an alien planet in this epic, narrative-driven and action-packed FPS from the award-winning id Software and Raven Software.

Check out the Xbox Insider Hub on Windows PC to join the preview today! This preview is an integral part of bringing the game to Windows PC, and we are delighted that you’ll be a part of it!

I think part of that is the tech's fault, idtech4 had a very specific, memorable look that was hard to diverge from, and also was even less better at open areas than idtech2. As a result it was hard to not notice the similarities in style between it and Doom 3. Didn't help that they ditched the orange sky and the style of the maps tended towards D3 as well.

Very true. Prey 2006 suffered from this as well, but not as much. Wolfenstein 2009 and Brink were able to pull it off though but they had the benefit of years of experience and many modifications, probably, in the engine at that point. Brink did achieve a new level of ugly in its characters though, so good job there.

Though the part where you get turned into a Strogg was really cool. Too bad that was spoiled before release so everyone knew it was coming.

That is the part I always think of when this game comes up. It really was quite a sequence.

I am inclined to agree with Romero on how it kind of lost clarity with the blending of Doom 3 and Quake 2. Although I think he is just saying this form the sidelines, he was no longer at id after Quake 1.

Q4 was an attempt to do something with a little more story again since squad-based shooters were popular at the time but it turned out pretty mediocre. The "story" of Q4 was also an afterthought.

Not really true. At the time they asked the fanbase what they wanted and they wanted the game to focus on the Q2 story more. If you look at how the game's story actually progresses throughout Q4, it's absolutely not an afterthought, it's just not a story that you're going to particularly remember. Though the part where you get turned into a Strogg was really cool. Too bad that was spoiled before release so everyone knew it was coming.

The biggest issue with Q4 I felt was that the increased emphasis on "realistic" elements detracted from the best parts of the action and movement gameplay of the original.

Q4 was primarily developed by Raven though. That's why there was an attempt at a story haha.

Ooops, you're right... yeah, that explains why there was at least a feeble story effort

I'd love for them to revisit the Stroggos Wars. While I loved Q1, it really didn't have a 'story', per se. Disparate level designs between episodes. It was brutal and simple: You're Quakeguy [Ranger], Earth figured out teleporters, eldritch entity connects into it, go kill the entity. A mix of themes and such [If Petersen was working on a project, it probably had Cthulhu stuff. Which is good. Because Cthulhu Wars is amazing.]

That's how id rolled back then (or still does?). Instead of envisioning a story, writing a script and creating the scenes (levels) to tell that story, id always first built the gameplay and levels and then wrote a thin napkin script to connect the levels to each other. That's why I think it is rather pointless to debate about the "stories" of Doom or Quake etc. - They don't really have one and id never really cared. They never gave it much/any thought. Which is probably the reason why Q3A dropped the campaign altogether and went full multiplayer arena style.

Then we got Q2. Actual story [Action hero movie as you can get, but still...], good gameplay, contiguous level design.

I've loved all the Quake games. Except Champions. Doesn't feel as engaging as Q3Arena ever did.

But I'd definitely be down for them remaking Q2 and Q4. They'd look slick as hell, and they could hammer out any of the bad design that they thought would work the first time around.

Insider Preview of what?

Of the MS Store build of the game, I guess. Probably having more trouble than usual porting it because the game is so old.

Insider Preview of what? Q4 is a 17 year old game that was mediocre at launch, the Q2 story was always boring and this sequel no one cared about after Q3A's greatness.

Q1 was awesome, they should have expanded on those ideas.

Speak for yourself, Q2 was great, and actually HAD a story, unlike Q1, which didn't even have a decent final boss battle.

It needs a remaster/re-release like Q1 received.
