Out of the Blue

Happy summer to those of us here in the northern hemisphere, as today is the solstice. So today I am officially Summertime Blue. Likewise, happy winter to all of you below the equator. It's been seasonally warm around here lately, but we were quite lucky in avoiding the nasty heat wave that recently covered a lot of the country. Here's hoping we can avoid too many of those so we can enjoy the warm weather rather than dread it.

Obituary: Political commentator and columnist Mark Shields dies at 85.
Obituary: Caleb Swanigan, former Purdue men's basketball star and NBA first-round pick, dies at 25.

Heck, back in the 80s in Miami, when we had ignition points, I just had a kill switch on my car - a toggle hidden under the dash. Did the job. Stopped at least two attempted car thefts.

If car alarms are going off at such regularity that you're going to inanely call it "noise pollution" maybe a better, smarter concern would be the amount of crime happening in your area?

And people are supposed to do what about the crime in their area? Become a vigilante? Move to a better neighborhood? Call the cops every time a car alarm goes off and have them laugh at you?

Form a neighborhood watch? Tackle the issues that cause crime? Push your local representatives to actually DO something about it. There's countless things you can do other than throw up your hands and whine "We can't do these ridiculous things, so we might as well do nothing!".

Basically what you're saying is that if we are annoyed by car alarms, the solution is to solve all of society's problems so that crime no longer exists instead of just, ya know, turning the fucking things off because they don't do any good. I'm really not sure what's so hard to understand about that.

No, I didn't say that, and it's clear you didn't even read what I said because all you did was suggest the same false binary choice again.

When was the last year it was 39.6 in your town in June?
Never, we broke temp records (nearly) everywhere in the federal state. Although in some regions it's not unusual in June to get 35°C or more so it's not like it is super unusual to have a warm June.
But you know what was the real kicker? We had pretty damn strong wind. Wind that was 39.6 °C - this wasn't so much "sun" temperature, it was hot wind.

And because I am me, I picked THAT day to replace my GPU fan (successfully) complete with redoing the thermal paste stuff etc. Shaved off 3 °C ;p Not that you could tell with room temp near 29°C

My guess would be some, but not many. Much easier to simply steal the cars that people leave unlocked.

As people say, locks are only intended to keep honest people out of things. A skilled thief can get into anything with no issues. Not like on TV, where they have magic hackers, but LPL on youtube has videos of him breaking into pretty much almost all variants of locks.

My condolences to his family and friends. When you're that tall though at 6'9", you may expect to have a shorter life expectancy on average. Make sure to always check-in with your physician and stay as healthy as possible is the best advice.
His wiki page says,
On January 20, 2020, Swanigan was traded back to the Portland Trail Blazers along with Trevor Ariza and Wenyen Gabriel in exchange for Kent Bazemore, Anthony Tolliver and two future second-round picks. He opted out of playing with the Trail Blazers in the 2020 NBA Bubble due to personal reasons.
It is possible those personal reasons were medical -- complete speculation by me... Found an article which seemed to suggest he opt-ed to due COVID concerns, which was something NBA players were allowed to do. *shrug*

Burrito of Peace wrote on Jun 21, 2022, 13:03:

Car alarms are utterly pointless, no one pays attention to them. Moreover, most of them are terrible at energy management and will drain a battery flat. A better security option is a secure relay that completely disables the entire power system of a vehicle until a physical key is inserted and turn to close the relay. Now, most humans being the useless, lazy fucks that they are will undoubtedly just leave the key in and turned on. However, if that is found to be the case, they should get zero payout from their insurance company if their vehicle is stolen and lost or stolen and damaged. Make the relay box out of Inconel or Boron steel so it is extremely tough to break in to. I would guess most people are going to notice someone in their driveway or on their street with a gas powered angle grinder or a plasma welder.

Thinking it through a bit further, when the relay is locked open, the vehicle should lock the differential, the brakes, and the transmission, too. That way a shitbird thief can't simply roll it away.
This sounds like a great idea. A boron steel relay box would not cost that much either. My vehicle already has a shield for catalytic converter protection. I'd like an alarm that works in coordination that just laughs at the attempted thief and calls them an idiot.

One would think they'd have evolved those car alarms by now.

Like make it ring the owner's phone only and activate a locator beacon that you can review with an app on the phone/computer.

You still warn the owner, no one is inconvenienced and in the rare case of a true theft, you are aware of it and can warn the cops, for all the good it'll do.

Granted thieves will adapt as they always do, but at least it wouldn't wake up the block.
