Ready or Not Delisted on Steam

Ready or Not is no longer ready, as the game's Steam page is currently unavailable. A tweet from developer VOID Interactive and a post on Steam acknowledge the removal, but express ignorance about what happened: "There is an issue somewhere with Steams [sic] Backend and it's resulted in the game being taken off the store for some reason, but Ready or Not is still on the platform." This may not be as mysterious as that, however, as NME reports the removal came after the game added a level involving a mass shooting at a nightclub called Prysm. This recalls the news from last December when Team17 announced it was no longer publishing the game shortly after the developer said it was planning a school shooting level. Here's word on how the new Prysm update came on the sixth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting:
Prysm takes place in the aftermath of a terrorist attack at a nightclub, and depicts the scene of a mass shooting, with piles of bodies strewn across the map. The level bears some resemblance to the 2015 Bataclan shooting in Paris, as well as the 2016 shooting at Pulse nightclub. Questionably, the map was added on June 12 – the anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting.

While no connection has been confirmed, Valve has removed games depicting similar scenes in the past – in 2018, Valve de-platformed a game called Active Shooter after complaints from campaigns from parents of school shooting victims.

One wonders if this was a cynical PR ploy to get the game in the news. With 44000 reviews and a 93% ranking, they shouldn't need that though.
dammit
Now I gotta wait till Saturday to share conspiracy nonsense posts.

They got pwned for trademark infringement.

Man, I love this country. You can show mowing down civvies by the truckload without anyone batting an eye. Have something that's a bit too on the nose of a different IP? Then all Hell breaks loose.
And showing a nipple is even worse.
Trademark infringement isn't something you can just not fight though... either you hold a trademark or you don't, if you hold it, anyone in violation has to be followed through with full legal force.

Also this topic needs an update from Blues, because as usual when Blues lets speculation stand in the way of the actual news we get conspiracy nonsense posts
And with update I mean that the actual news is now flat out wrong, the game is no longer MIA

The developers of this game have a history of very questionable decisions. Unprofessional and/or childish are two words that fit some of their decisions.

Eventually they come to the right decision after suffering business or community negative feedback. Sometimes it feels like 12 year-olds are in charge at Void Interactive.

Hollywood is the most wokest place on earth but when it comes to the unbridled romanticization of gun violence. … Crickets.
But you'd be asking Hollywood to be creative, so good luck with that.

There's a whole other dimension you just missed though. That of the box office earner. Most of the movies that AREN'T based on violence are not huge earners. People WANT to see what they want to see. Sure you could have Hollywood shift to making all thoughtful and insightful pieces that are about the human condition etc. but I guarantee you those would not earn anything like a good old fashioned sex and violence fest.

Someone else mentioned WW1. And yeah, lots of dead soldiers in WW1 games. Can't recall many full of dead civilians, though

To be fair, I'd hope more people died in a world war than by random civilians shooting other random civilians. It's not much of an indictment of the right to gun ownership though.

Well that makes sense then. All they had to do was change the names and keep the setting. Rockstar does it all the time. Like the GTA series with city names and cars.

Maybe they should have just gone the No Russian route. Valve would probably have not batted an eye.
It does make one wonder where the line is. Modern Warfare 2 is still for sale, Postal is still for sale, Manhunt is still for sale, Hatred is still for sale. At least in Ready or Not you play as the good guys, unlike all the other games I just mentioned, which makes the delisting even weirder. I guess the specificity was just too much.

I'd guess two-fold.
First, the pile of dead bodies. A game like swat wouldn't have that
Second, No Russian isn't played for unwarranted shock value. It's to show the evil of the villain, the enablement of the "good guys," and the choice/involvement of the player. It had a purpose. And the victims weren't the audience, as harsh as that sounds it does make a difference, which is why you don't really see games where you fight the American military in a historic operation.

This would have been fine without the bodies, I'd guess. Maybe not. With Fox News so quick to blame mass shootings on video games, it's probably wise to not give them fuel to air
