Starfield Gameplay Reveal

The climax of the Bethesda Xbox showcase was the unveiling of an Gameplay Reveal Trailer for Starfield. This extended look at the upcoming space game includes Todd Howard's explanations of what to expect. The Bethesda Website has a recap of what we learned today. Here's a bit:
25 years in the making, Starfield introduces an entirely new frontier to explore—space. In 2330, you join Constellation, the last group of space explorers seeking rare artifacts throughout the galaxy. Venture through the stars and get to know a memorable cast of characters on a quest to answer humanity’s greatest question—what is out there?

True to Bethesda Game Studios’ immersive RPG DNA, customization is key in Starfield. A look at the character creation menu shows off the depth of choice you have when customizing your hero. Who you will be and who you will become is up to you.

Stake your claim among the stars by building outposts on discovered planets to conduct research and gather resources. Resources that can be used to upgrade your gear, modify your weapons and ensure you’re ready to take on any danger you might encounter.

I wonder if this will be the last game they create with the 'Creation Engine'. They really should move to Unreal Engine imo. I know this is an offhand remark, but I have read they keep having trouble with their inhouse engine.

Todd Howard explains how The Elder Scrolls 6 will build on Starfield's engine

Bethesda is using the same game engine to build both Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6, but work on the latter will lead to changes to their shared base.

In a new interview with The Telegraph, Bethesda studio director Todd Howard reaffirmed that the studio's Creation Engine 2 is being "built for both" games – and it's worth emphasizing that it's being built, not that it was built.

Bethesda previously confirmed that it began investing more into engine work ahead of the start of the new console generation, and Starfield will be the first game to put the new engine to work. However, the engine's feature set will be modified to meet the unique needs of Starfield, The Elder Scrolls 6, and by extension any future Bethesda games using Creation Engine 2.

Todd said you *could* visit a thousand systems, not that it would be worthwhile.
Modders: Hold my beer.

Yep, very stoked, every (non always online FO76) Bethesda game has been great from the start, and eventually went to be full fledged classics.
Exactly, and just Fallout 4 in space would be a sell to me.... the outpost system made less stupid, building own ships, ships as their own specialized always with-you outpost, that sounds extremely neat. You can basically build your own flying home, if this game gets modding it will be WILD beyond imagination. Especially if you can have factions with ships, that can not just fly around but also land, invade, and fight your outpost... and other factions.

The possibilities are damn near infinite. So yeah, I am also hyped Even about proper hair physics. Sounds stupid, but that kills my immersion HARD in Skyrim and Fallout 4

Not ashamed at all to say that video made me excited. That said, Bethesda has proven that great videos and promises from Howard mean very little. If the game is as great as that video made it look then I might get lost for weeks. But nowadays, especially with Bethesda, nothing short of getting an honest opinion post-release from a very select group of reviewers will convince me that I wasn't lied to again.

PR effort feels like Cyberpunk 2077.
They should hire Hollie Bennett to feed us some lies about how great this game plays.

Two things we can expect from a Bethesda RPG:

✅ Epic scale!
✅ Lots of bugs! Even more so when you consider Todd's words: "It's not how you launch, it's what it becomes."

Probably best to wait about six months after launch.

Enderal is one of the best RPGs I've ever had the pleasure to play, and it's a Skyrim Steam free total conversion.

Looks intriguing. No way I'd ever preorder, though. Going to wait for reviews, then a few patches. I certainly hope they ditch the lock-picking mini-game, or at least give us the option to turn it off.

I wasn't a fan at first but you really owe it to yourself to go back and try F4 again but fully modded, it's a completely different game. I have about 600 hours in it now.

Skyrim to. To me their games keep evolving unlike most other games with mods and major conversions. Still playing Enderal now... this just doesn't happen often. Stuff people may complain about there is a good change there is a mod to enhance, not say fix things (they might) but enhance closer to personal preferences. Yeah maybe Skyrim's main story wasn't stellar, but the DLC's were better, additional content and features in mods still make it very interesting to play. As a pc gamer I measure all that together, I wish a lot more games had this type of support, some do as well, but not many.

My #1 ask for Starfield would be to use that FO76 multiplayer code to make true coop play possible, maybe down the road. I'd still love to play Skyrim with common coop to, not the more official server controlled FO76 offering, there is totally a coopland in-between single player and FO76.

GOTY 2023
I think it's too early to call it GOTY 2023, there are a ton of games dropping next year, but it could receive just due to cultural mindset. It would have to be judged as an open-world game following this year's Elden Ring, which I think is the blueprint for open world games now not being as hand-holdy.

I get the hate for Todd Howard, after the tons of lying hype about Fallout 76 and its debacle.
Though I hear the game has gotten really good by now, microtransactions appart.

But I only care for the game, never see any trailers, just peruse the reviews when it comes out, wait a year or two, then enjoy it.
And for me, Bethesda has *always* delivered stellarly.

Lol, apparently Acleacius is not a Bethesda/Todd Howard fan.

Still, I thought the video looked really good, for the most part. Combat seemed a bit clunky, but what else is new from Bethesda. Looks like there is going to be a pretty good vanilla experience, and once the real modders get to it, it'll be a great game.
If I'm not being a smartass, it's just someone pretending to be me!

But I agree and of course will buy it too. To me the spaceships look more like The Outer World and their physics, since I never played NMS or others.
Also, The Outer Worlds was so brightly colored, at least partly to keep players from getting visually bored, with dead lifeless planets.

Looks good to me and will be basically free with Gamepass (I'll have to see how it mods there).

Yeah it's just a... doesn't everything fall into that line of thinking.

This one packs a lot into one game which makes it more of a unicorn.

Did anybody notice when the NPCs took bullet damage there was no blood/knockback on hit? Definitely want to play the game without health bars as well, for immersion purposes.

Also, if we join the enemy faction, can we blow up a planet?

I did notice that. Like they were being nudged.

Todd Howard is a proven liar.

Still salty over almost 20 years old slightly exaggerated Oblivion marketing? Well, maybe you'll get over it in the next decade or so...

I bet it took them 6 months to get that disjointed gameplay frame perfect so they could cut it up and put it together. You can't spell Starfield without Bugthesda. I don't believe the graphics are representative of the final game. And I certainly expect it to be another bug filled, predatorily monetized, Bugthesda game.

You don't have to play, let alone buy it. Just tune out and enjoy following/playing other games. There are options, you know?

But Bethesda haters have always been the weirdest bunch. They bitch, whine and moan incessantly about the marketing, about Todd's looks, about bugs, about everything... and then they preorder the fucking game just so they can continue bitching, whining and moaning incessantly. Very amusing!

Todd Howard desperately trying to look young and hip with faded jeans, sneakers, and a cool guy leather jacket, if he is hawking it, stay away.

I imagine with Todd Howard money he has a stylist, or more likely, Bethesda does, who handles all that. My guess is those clothes were either brought to his house for him or waiting at the event for him to change into.

My imagination can be pretty crazy sometimes though.
