Op Ed

  • PC Gamer - I'm begging space sims to stop turning themselves into shooters.
"But those are first-person shooters, not grand galactic simulations. When a game can render up hundreds, thousands, even quintillions of worlds but can't imagine a scenario where you don't view them through iron sights, it feels like not only a failure of imagination, but a lack of confidence in the galaxy you've created. Do EVE's hypercapitalist fleet commanders really need to be poking each other with shotguns?"

*Not Outer Worlds the shooter, but Outer Wilds, the puzzle/Adventure, space exploration game.

I kinda thought he might have been talking about a different game than I was but I was afraid to say anything given how bad my reading comprehension has gotten..

I clarify it every time I bring it up, they even both came out the same year, so it's understandable to get the titles confused
Someone in this thread already got it screwed up.. at least you were thinking of the right game you just missed it mentioned in the article.

Space Sims feel "cursed" because very few have managed to get it "right". One of the most popular in this niche is the X series, and they still don't have a very satisfying flight/combat model. It's mediocre at best. Then there are the "arcade" sims like Everspace which try real hard but the immersion is just not there.

The last great space sim was Freespace 2, after that there have been some good attempts but nothing on that level. Then you have Starcitizen which, when it finally implodes, will sully the genre for decades to come.

So I know it's a MMO, but this is why I ditched Star Trek Online after only about a year. The FPS aspect was not avoidable and it was trash. It still is trash as far as I know. I also don't think STO is the kind of "space sim" that she means really.

As for the other games out there, I didn't really think of this as some sort of epidemic in the genre. I haven't played a couple of her bigger examples tho...particularly Elite and Eve, which I have actively avoided due to a lack of time to invest currently. I think No Man's Sky is exactly what it was meant to be though...I don't agree with her on that one at all. I know that Chris Robert's latest pipe dream has FPS aspirations but it has a lot of aspirations....and I think we all know that it will miss the mark on many of them. At least this decade.

The power and memory of todays gaming machines allows developers to stop making "racing" games or "shooters" and now make multiple perspective experiences. I don't blame any dev for trying to explore that and I think its really narrow minded to try to limit that. The titles used as examples in the editorial are all selling just fine. The article makes no "good" points IMHO. It is really subjective, which is what editorials are for I guess. It just would have landed better if she used examples that were kind of universally panned. I just don't know what those would have been.

That would track. Man there is something beyond fucked up about like, digging around someones social media just so you can see if they are trans for the sole purpose of misgendering them on some other forum.

Doesn't really applies, Outer Wilds was a first person shooter.

I was talking about games like Freespace/Allegiance/Freelancer etc.
Hmm, I don't remember any shooting in Outer Wilds. Are you sure you don't mean Outer Worlds?

Yup. You definitely did not read the article or you would know that it was written by a "she" and not a "he". The point she is making is also a different one. She does not mind the on foot, first person gameplay but she wishes that there was more to do than shoot things like meaningful exploration, a real sense of discovery, picking flowers (or whatever it is that girlie gamers do in such games hurhur).

I'm personally done trying to make fun of anyone's identity, or even confirm genders (unless it's personal relationship type stuff where yeah, I don't need or want another male member in the room). These people are obviously struggling/have struggled with their self-identity, and I don't wish it on anyone.

I think that space sims without guns would be ok, maybe implement like a creature finding system as stated in the article. Pokemon in space perhaps?

How do you have space combat without any shooting? You can play space trucker/courier/miner in Elite, X4, etc. if you're so inclined.

You didn't even read the quote beneath the article's title on this very site haven't you?

Quote: "Do EVE's hypercapitalist fleet commanders really need to be poking each other with shotguns?"

Article talks about turning space games into FPS games, that's what they mean by "shooter".
The article is kind of about both things. The last two paragraphs ask what could be done with a giant galaxy simulator besides fighting, citing exobiology a la No Man's Sky and some other mechanics.
