Space Sims feel "cursed" because very few have managed to get it "right". One of the most popular in this niche is the X series, and they still don't have a very satisfying flight/combat model. It's mediocre at best. Then there are the "arcade" sims like Everspace which try real hard but the immersion is just not there.

The last great space sim was Freespace 2, after that there have been some good attempts but nothing on that level. Then you have Starcitizen which, when it finally implodes, will sully the genre for decades to come.

Well don't I feel like a complete dumbass. Sorry.

So I know it's a MMO, but this is why I ditched Star Trek Online after only about a year. The FPS aspect was not avoidable and it was trash. It still is trash as far as I know. I also don't think STO is the kind of "space sim" that she means really.

As for the other games out there, I didn't really think of this as some sort of epidemic in the genre. I haven't played a couple of her bigger examples tho...particularly Elite and Eve, which I have actively avoided due to a lack of time to invest currently. I think No Man's Sky is exactly what it was meant to be though...I don't agree with her on that one at all. I know that Chris Robert's latest pipe dream has FPS aspirations but it has a lot of aspirations....and I think we all know that it will miss the mark on many of them. At least this decade.

The power and memory of todays gaming machines allows developers to stop making "racing" games or "shooters" and now make multiple perspective experiences. I don't blame any dev for trying to explore that and I think its really narrow minded to try to limit that. The titles used as examples in the editorial are all selling just fine. The article makes no "good" points IMHO. It is really subjective, which is what editorials are for I guess. It just would have landed better if she used examples that were kind of universally panned. I just don't know what those would have been.

I'm personally done trying to make fun of anyone's identity, or even confirm genders (unless it's personal relationship type stuff where yeah, I don't need or want another male member in the room). These people are obviously struggling/have struggled with their self-identity, and I don't wish it on anyone.

I think that space sims without guns would be ok, maybe implement like a creature finding system as stated in the article. Pokemon in space perhaps?

The article is kind of about both things. The last two paragraphs ask what could be done with a giant galaxy simulator besides fighting, citing exobiology a la No Man's Sky and some other mechanics.
