Here in central Florida, hurricanes are relatively rare. They tend to hug the coast, and when they do turn inland they lose energy quickly. There are exceptions though, like 2005 (the crazy year of Katrina) when we had three hurricanes cross the center of the state. Very scary.

But I'll take hurricanes to tornado country, or earthquake country, or flooding country (we live in high part of the state - second tallest hill in these parts, and flooding is not an issue here) any day. You at least get a good week of warning with hurricanes. Yes, we do occasionally get tornados, but they are somewhat rare here (although a bad one passed just a half mile north of me in 2007 - very scary), and Florida tornados also don't stay on the ground very long unlike midwest ones. They don't usually cut huge swathes, but instead wreck one or two buildings then skip several miles and briefly touch down again.

and btw strange new worlds ep. 3 was a damn fine hour, an old school space adventure for the ages. no politicking, just the good guys vs the bad guys for all the marbles, and an emotional roller coaster to boot.

yeah, not a thing. not one person here on the west coast has spent a single neuron being worried about hurricanes. we certainly don't prep for it like we do for quakes. if one hit here it would be a massive disaster.

My understanding is that the polar lows that hit the Arctic Coast are smaller than hurricanes, although I'm not an expert. Likewise the Great Lakes storms. San Diego has had one hurricane in recorded history, but it was in 1858, not 1913 -- a 164 year record is pretty good! I think 1913 was a historic Great Lakes storm.

I remember going to watch "the thing" at the cinema. It really disturbed me at the time and it took some time for me to watch it again, I think it was the dog scene that got me :-)

Sure, if they can find suitable work and community elsewhere. By comparison, hurricanes are a more survivable natural disaster than fires, earthquakes or tornadoes.

Unless you work on the ocean you only want to be there, as opposed to need to be there. I get the draw I just think it's stupid that people think insurance or FEMA should be available to them for a personal choice like that. At the very least they should constructing homes that make sense. Geodesic domes don't have flat walls to catch wind. Sure they can get damaged by flying debris but at least they'll never be blown away. And put them on stilts/raised platforms for god sake. I'll never understand how people live in flood zones yet elevated homes aren't a requirement.
