Out of the Blue

The swans both appeared on the pond this weekend, which was the first time we've seen them there since they began nesting in the adjacent marsh. This led me to speculate their brood may have hatched, and a Facebook post by a neighbor confirms this is the case. I'll take a walk past the area this afternoon to see if I can spot anyone. I'll be careful, as I don't want to upset anyone, but I would love to get a look at the babies when they're still so little.

Was Richard Gere seen anywhere near that hamster study?

I find that story to be a little bit amusing because it reminds me of one of the main plot points of Serenity.

Gerbil, hamster, whatever. Both can be shot out of the end of a cardboard tube as a makeshift cannon!

Here's the weird thing about the gerbil/hamster distinction in relation to that particular urban legend.

Gerbils are the ones that bite.

I don't know if everyone's heard, but Jiff has recalled some of its peanut butter products. I didn't hear about it until last night, and as luck would have it, I had just opened a jar of Jif peanut butter Friday that I bought it a few weeks ago. I checked and it is in the recall. I didn't worry, because I had eaten some and I was fine. I didn't know that Salmonella can take a few days before symptoms hit, and I spent about 3 hours in the bathroom this morning with "symptoms."

The same governor who practically made it mandatory for everyone in the state of Texas to carry a gun is now saying that he'll get to the bottom of the school shooting in Uvalde that killed 15.

You've mentioned the chatter from "conservative forums" a couple times. I'd ask what they were but i don't really wanna know. If that murderer had any social media i hope it gets locked up before everyone on facebook shares it a million times and helps feed the next copycat.

blue i think it would be an interesting hobby for you to get into wildlife photography, and as a purely coincidental side effect share the results with us ;-)

sounds like you live in a very woodsy life-filled place, would be a shame to not document its changes over the years. beginner DSLR kits aren't super expensive. couple hundred bucks for a starter body and kit lenses, and very rewarding when you get the outcome you had pictured in your mind.

I'm sure Mr. Abbott will discover why the gun man had to pay such outrages prices for his guns.

As for the any "false flag" reportedly coming from conservative forums... so, do they think Abbott is part of the pedo/cannibal cabal now?

I am laughing at the shooting in Uvalde today. Not because I find it comedic, I don't. I find it incredibly tragic. I am laughing because it's a lot like when you tell a kid over and over "Don't put the fork in the wall socket"...and then they do. They scream and cry and act surprised. You're laughing because the inevitable finally occurred.

The kid is America, the fork is firearms, and the wall socket are the now thousands of preventable deaths.

But we decided, as a country, that we just don't care. So be it. Stop complaining as a country until you are willing to effectively do something as a country.

On the local level, Abbot will act all concerned and nothing will happen unless the majority of the victims are white since the shooter was hispanic. If the victims are hispanic, then a lot of noise will be made but nothing of substance will come of it. Why? Because welcome to Texas.

Is there anything we can do as citizens or does something need to be done on the national level? What type of event has to happen for our leaders to do something? Like if an entire school was executed? Starting to doubt even that. Voting seems like an impasse. It's like there are several hundred ticking time bombs at any moment in this country that could be set off. I'm not Superman and this is incredibly frustrating, but then again not even Superman can be everywhere all at once. Those are my neighbors who are dying.

As citizens? Given how divided this country is, not much.

As a country, here is a non-exhaustive list:

  • Outlaw PACs
  • Outlaw lobbying
  • Outlaw campaign contributions. Every political official runs on a limited, public fund
  • Term limits for all politicians and judges
  • Outlaw redistricting
  • Dismantle the Electoral College and go to a total public vote
  • Disallow riders on bills. Every bill must stand on its own merit
  • Create and enforce solid, well reasoned domestic terror charges
  • Revamp the tax system and return to a progressive tax
  • Political officials must divest themselves of all interests and stocks in any corporation prior to taking office and may not hold any interests or stocks during the course of their term
  • Elected officials may not have held a corporate board seat ten years prior to or after their term
  • Maximum age limits on elected officials
