Dan Simmons is an absolute genius. I read the Hyperion (and Endymion) books a long time ago, and I really need to reread them. This is one of those series that ranks up there with the best of them, how he manages to balance the "personal" stories of the characters with the overarching "plot" (although that word doesn't really do it justice) is nothing short of amazing.

This should have been a big Game of Thrones-like HBO production, there is enough material for at least 4 seasons of 10 (or even more) episodes in the 4 books that make up the Hyperion and Endymion Cantos, it's not going to work as a movie.

Dr. Strange was my first 4DX movie. Can't say I noticed any scents, either. I was pretty suprised at how much the seats moved. Had to hold on to the armrests a few times to stay in my seat. I thought it was pretty fun, and Strange was a good movie it for it, since it's pretty non-stop. Personally, I don't get all the negative reviews. I thought it was a great action film. The closest thing I can think of comparing it to is an Indiana Jones film, in terms of action-adventure with some horror thrown in.

Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion are some of my favorite sci-fi books.

There is not a chance in Hell that a single movie or even a pair of movies will hit even 20% of the what the first book offers. As other have said, it needs to be a mini-series with a serious budget. The first book alone would take at least 8 hours to tell properly.

I would love to see how the Stables, the Ultimates, and the Volatiles are represented, though. You'd almost have to do a TRON style representation to show what it was like when Brawne and Johnny went to talk to one of the Stables.

Oh, and also -- Hyperion essentially ends in a cliff hanger. It is really 900 page novel broken into two books. So, even if they managed to cover the entire novel, it is half the story.

It would make it much more manageable if it were a mini-series. There are separate stories for each of the pilgrims which as the reader you see in flashbacks. It has been a bit since I read it last, but I don't recall there being a lot of sex, but there is some. There is some time dilation. The book's universe uses both instantaneous interplanetary travel via "farcasters" and "slow" travel via the Hawking drive on ships, trips can take many months during which passengers often hibernate. These trips via Hawking drive happen at relativistic speeds, time on ship advances much slower than it does for someone on a planet.

I saw Dr. Strange in 4DX. It was fun, kind of like a movie amusement park ride. One of the coolest things is drone shots: As the shot pans up and looks down from above, the seats tilt forward, triggering a little vertigo in your inner ear. Supposedly there were scents, but I failed to detect any of them. My wife said she smelled some perfume when there were flowers on screen. Fight scenes were probably the least fun, with the seats jerking around and getting kidney punched. Anyway, I'd recommend it at least once.

Nothing about organized religion strikes me as "more evil than I can imagine". By it's very nature, organized religion is evil.
