Out of the Blue

A post in our news forum by fujiJuice that was helpfully reposted to the General Forum by RedEye9 requested that we consider a new feature. He asked: "Can you please make the logo in the footer either link back to the homepage or to the top of the current page. I would prefer homepage." Well, ask and ye shall receive, as Frans noted in his reply. In fact, the way this is implemented covers both suggestions. Clicking on the footer logo on any content page on the site will now return you to the front news page. And if you click on the footer on the front page, it will scroll back to the top. This can make navigation a little more convenient, so hopefully some of you find it an improvement. Thanks to Frans for getting this implemented, and for coming up with the cool JavaScript to scroll back to the top of the front page rather than reloading it, which is downright elegant.

God I hope we're not in for a hurricane season like 2005. I'm in Central Florida, and the only time we ever got hit with a serious hurricane in the past 23 years was 2005. Three of them decided to cross the center of the state that year, which is normally very rare.

Yeah, when we built the new house four years ago (the Fortress of Solitude) I had a whole house generator installed. Over sized 23K Kohler, so there's no messing with having certain circuits disabled when it's running. Currently it never runs at over 40% load because it's size was based on the idea that we would be adding a pool house/inlaws quarters which we haven't gotten around to. 500 gallon propane tank (buried, so some whacko doesn't take a shot at it). Ironically, it's only been needed once in four years and that was because someone drove a car into a light pole, and that was only for a few hours. It's supposed to be able to run for 5 or 7 days on a full tank, depending on the load. Only use it gets right now is the biweekly full load test it runs for half an hour. But I just topped off the tank for the start of hurricane season. And yeah, propane prices are way up this year.

So plunk down for a AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D next month and build a new system, or wait until fall and buy a Zen 4?
I would wait or buy the 5800x unless you're desperate for that very specialized processor that will only give you gains in some games. See today's review https://www.bluesnews.com/s/248183/hardware-reviews
5800X3D costs the same as the 5800x, while running half the games faster, especially games I'm interested in, like flight sims. What's your reasoning to go with the 5800x? What's the expected performance boost with Zen 4? Will it run FTL in 4k?

The 5800X is around $300 now, you'd have to be a sucker to pay MSRP for an 18-month-old CPU. Plus the biggest gains from the X3D (10-20%) are at 1080p, the benchmarks show very little difference at 4K. IMO it's a waste of money until further down the road when it also has its price slashed, and even then only for older AM4 systems where the CPU upgrade would be a cost-effective alternative to re-building around Zen 4. If you've been waiting to put together a brand new rig, might as well wait a few more months to see what happens. Worst case, you just go with Zen 3 instead for even cheaper than it is now.
I didn't realize the X was so cheap. That changes the calculus. IIRC Zen 4 is coming with a new socket? My current PC is down, and I haven't had time to try and fix it, so getting it running also is a factor in the timing.

Ugg, I guess I need to re-inquire about getting a whole home generator. I had been toying with the idea for a while since we've been having more intense summer storms and close calls with tornadoes, bringing with them power outages lasting several days. The final straw was being without power for 6 days after the ice storm a couple of years ago, so I finally inquired about one. They were backed up to even get a quote, so I was put on a waiting list. I never heard from them though, and just never looked back into it.

10 Wrong Future Predictions From Sci-fi Classics Like 2001.

As prescient as Kubrick’s opus was in many ways, it ultimately failed to foresee that turn-of-the-millennia Americans would be less interested in space travel than they were in who won Survivor.

What most 50s-80s sci fi got wrong about the future is that they thought it would be about massive leaps in energy: fusion reactors, space travel, flying cars, etc. Instead we got a massive revolution in information instead: the internet, social media, AI, etc.

I fail to see where any of those films made actual predictions at all. They were merely set in a fictitious future. And a good deal of those things may yet come to pass like Soylent Green.

The film also predicted that by 2022 New York City would have 40 million people living in it.

No it didn't predict that. Regardless many cities are getting there.

Tokyo - 37,435,191
Delhi - 29,399,141
Shanghai - 26,317,104

And there are another 7 cities with populations over 20 million each. That's just way too many goddamned people.

Yeah, NCFOM is a great bit of cinema. That scene at the end with TLJ and Barry Corbin was just brilliant. I'll have to give that and The Road a re-watch. Cormac McCarthy is one dark motherfucker.

RIP Vangelis, famed film composer and synth pioneer, dead at 79

My friend's dad was into really avant garde music in the 70s and 80s and turned us on to a lot of good music we would have never heard of otherwise. Jon & Vangelis were one of those groups. still one of my favourite songs....
