FTC Investigating Sony/Bungie Deal

The Information reports (may require registration or subscription) that the United States Federal Trade Commission is investigating Sony's announced deal to acquire Bungie for a reported $3.6 billion. It doesn't seem clear at this point what sort of peril this creates for the potential transaction:
The Federal Trade Commission has opened an in-depth investigation of Sony’s proposed $3.6 billion takeover of Bungie, the gaming studio behind Destiny and Halo, according to people familiar with the matter. While the FTC may not be able to block the deal, its decision to review it is the latest example of how aggressive the agency is becoming in reviewing mergers.

So wait, the FTC is fine with Microsoft buying Activision/Blizzard but seemingly not ok with Sony buying Bungie? That seems a little bit one sided to me, since Activision/Blizzard is a huge publisher and Bungie is - a game development studio that happens to currently self-publish their own game IP I guess? How does one compare Acti/Blizz to Bungie then?

I think the FTC is also investigating the Microsoft Activision/Blizzard deal.

Just depends on what they are investigating it for. I didn't read the article so I don't know...but it seems unlikely that being investigated is a good thing for the deal.

I'd be concerned if the FTC wasn't investigating large mergers like this, especially when they have the potential to impact competition in the market.

Lol, don't blame the FTC for what the mayor of your town/city did to pad his account. Very likely, you only have one provider in your city because the local government was paid off to sign legislature saying no competitors can come in.
