Today Epic Games announced a $2 billion round of funding to advance the company’s vision to build the metaverse and support its continued growth.
This round includes investments from existing investor Sony Group Corporation as well as KIRKBI, the family-owned holding and investment company behind The LEGO Group, with each party investing $1 billion respectively. All three companies highly value both creators and players, and aim to create new social entertainment exploring the connection between digital and physical worlds. Epic continues to have only a single class of common stock outstanding and remains controlled by its CEO and founder, Tim Sweeney.

I have a couple friends that are into it and they say that they can only tolerate it for 30 minutes or so because there's some cross-bleed from vr to reality (i.e. their brain thinks they're still wearing the headset when they're not)

Is that static, or procedurally generated?

With all this hype about the metaverse, one has to wonder if it will change people's opinion about wearing a headset. The only reason I haven't gotten into vr gaming is because I don't want to wear that shit. I like to know what's going on around me most of the time haha! No only that, but I have a couple friends that are into it and they say that they can only tolerate it for 30 minutes or so because there's some cross-bleed from vr to reality (i.e. their brain thinks they're still wearing the headset when they're not) 😆

*What's that Alyx ?, yeah, some funny post I'm reading, ha, how crazy is that ?*

Sony continues to show their ignorance and why they are no longer a relevant company.
They make some of the highest selling game franchises for a perpetually sold out console, the successor to one of the highest selling consoles of all time. They're investing in a company that underpins the entire gaming industry. Regardless of what you think of Epic's little store or whatever, seems like Sony is doing OK.

Alongside that, a healthy digital marketplace for Lego blocks or Lego items or just skins, would be available. I think Lego is envious of what Roblox has achieved, and figure if youth are playing Fortnite that's the best place to put their future product.BIGtrouble77 wrote on Apr 11, 2022, 14:26:
I don't really understand this investment unless Epic is going for some "meta verse" play in the future that Sony wants a piece of. This whole thing screams NFT too.
No one is nearly as close to a metaverse as Epic. They have had an extremely wide range of brands within Fortnite. Add LEGO, who is kind of an offline metaverse, and now their access to brands is almost stupidly wide.
Now, does that mean anything? Who knows. What do they do with them? Skins and items in Fortnite. But they're still far ahead of anyone else when it comes to letting people play with a whole lot of different brands in one online ecosystem.
I think it's uninteresting. I'm sure many here think it's uninteresting. I don't see an easy use case beyond skins, and frankly, as we see from streaming services, no one wants to play nicely and cooperate so I don't see anything significant happening without massive media consolidation (which, well, is happening), and I don't see any even theoretical use case appealing to me, personally. But, at the moment, Fortnite is the closest thing to a metaverse.

Long term I think it's a very smart investment by Sony.
The Matrix Demo for PS5 was a massive tech demo showcasing the power of the PS5 and Unreal engine. Same thing was done back in the day for the Unreal engine and PC (back when it use to be Unreal vs Quake engine).
Dude you can get that demo for Unreal 5. It's like a 100 gig install and is pretty fucking sic. Even sicker that you can modify it to your own use and change it up.
