Out of the Blue

Okay, here's an appeal to the producers of Jeopardy to name Ken Jennings permanent host. Or basically anybody but Mayim Bialik. I find her a little annoying, but MrsBlue can't stand her. And I mean can't stand, as in we can no longer watch the episodes she hosts. This is a real bummer. I am not proud to admit that part of the fun of watching for me is having someone appreciate my correct answers, so this is bad for my ego. I did come across some hopeful news when checking the spelling of Bialik's name. I found an article about Twitter outcry also expressing strong preferences for Ken. One quote nicely sums up why we don't have to feel bad for wishing Mayim out of a job. She already has residuals from two sitcoms, a current sitcom on the air, and all that sweet, sweet snake oil money: "She is not funny, she has more money than most TV personalities, she endorses a terrible product and should concentrate on other things rather than hosting Jeopardy which she is terrible at. Please bring back Ken Jennings!" Hear hear!

As a few of you are as untrusting of cloud based solutions as I am, I'm curious if any of you can recommend a webcam that has local storage and can be kept off the internet. My niece wants a couple of cameras inside her house to keep tabs on the kids and anyone visiting her place. Chip off the old block, like me, she doesn't want any cams connected to the Internet that have views inside her home, or can be hacked.

I've done a little research and all these cams nowadays are cloud based, but some have a local storage option. Don't mind spending $100 or a bit more per cam.

So far the only one I've come across that I would be willing to trust is the Wyze v3 camera. It's cloud based, but has a 32GB SD card that can be configured to continuously record upon motion to the card and overwrite the oldest files. Cam only needs to be on wifi to configure it from the phone app. Files are standard MP4 so the card can be pulled and watched on a PC, phone or tablet using a card reader. It can also be temporarily brought back in range of the wifi network it was configured on to view the local videos via the app, or make adjustments. It's reasonably priced at $50 with the SD card, and reviews say the quality is good and depending on the situation, you get 3 or 4 days worth of recordings which is fine.

My thinking is to configure the cameras using her phone's hotspot, and that way they are never setup to connect to the house wifi, but in a pinch she can turn on her hotspot to access the local video files via the app if she doesn't just want to pop out the card.

If anyone has any personal experience with any security camera hardware in an off line mode like this, I'd love to hear your recommendations.

Thanks!

I don't know, but my guess would be the firmware/software for many webcams is purposely programed with limited options. Choose 1 or 2 -- where 1 is their cloud server and 2 is the SD card inserted into the camera. (just made up that scenario). If you know of a webcam which allows what you are suggesting I'm sure that would be welcome information.
Alternatively, you could just get a non-WiFi closed circuit system.

A single webcam? I'm not sure.
There are systems out there, though, that are all local. I want to avoid cloud-based, but want to be able to access from my phone, so I'm currently pricing out whole-house (outdoor) systems that would be powered by Blue Iris. From what I understand, these can be cut off from the internet, though like I said, I want to be able to access from my phone from anywhere so I'd need that. There may be a way to automate whether it's online when you're out of the house.

Currently, my outdoor solution is a crappy chinese-made SD-card based cam. No cloud, but it is on the internet since it works solely through a poorly made app. It's frustrating in that it, at night, it has a red ring of lights that give pretty solid night vision but give me endless alerts for insects. It works well enough, though. I mostly use them to watch foxes and raccoons.

The joke on the arthritis drug was a good one. My father died at 68 from an arthritis drug called methotrexate. Dude was pretty healthy too, but it killed off his white blood cells and it was like watching someone rapidly and painfully die of AIDS. Ironically, my mom developed alopecia at the age of 14 and lost all of her hair which I supposed sucked for a girl growing up in the 50's.

I see Nick Kyrgios lost it again in Miami. Shocking. At some level it is a bit of a shame, if he could get his mind right he could probably do what Djokovic just failed to do, ie.. win all the slams in a single year. But he sees himself as a failed basketball star and simply can't get out of the hole he has dug. Points though for living his life the way he wants to.
