Blizzard on Diversity Improvements

Blizzard News introduces Makaiya Brown, the company's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I), and Development Lead since September 2021. Blizzard has famously fallen short in these areas, so she has her work cut out for her. Here's a bit on how things are progressing:
Progress is also taking place at multiple levels organically—you have seen many Blizzard development teams making great strides in representation, accessibility, and player behavior recently. And this year to date, 31.5% of our new hires self-identify as women–that’s just the beginning. We are grateful for the efforts of individuals and teams who have immediately embraced our goal of increasing diversity within Blizzard, and we are committed to a continuous focus on improvement in this area.

As a leader in DE&I, seeing this kind of action from individuals en masse in their areas of influence is incredibly moving. It is the kind of work that adds up to real change. Our work at Blizzard is not a matter of putting in a bunch of corporate training programs and calling it a day–this is a large-scale effort at the business, team, and individual levels, that will continue to be iterated upon and evolved to level up the core of who Blizzard is.

Hiring someone to make sure a company holds no racist beliefs, sure, I am completely with you. "Diversity" anything, however, is complete fucking bullshit. Hire who is the best in something. If the screening is done by a person who is not a racist, nobody should give a shit what the black/white/gender ratio is.

Hiring for diversity definitely effects the outcome of what the final product is if that product is creative in nature, as movies and videogames reflect upon the culture and politics of its creators, generally subliminally, sometimes explicit. However, I have never personally seen someone get hired only because they are black/white or for gender, they still have to go through a series of checks on knowledge, background, resume etc. Unfortunately, there will always be bias in hiring, anyone who has done a recent job search knows this. Plus, a more diverse company casts a wider net financially (gotta hit those market demographics), which is what a lot of companies are aiming for.

Great response.
Welcome to Blue's... or are you a returning member?
Either way, I hope you can maintain this patience and genuine attempts to explain.
