Elden Ring Reviews

Elden Ring is due for official release on Friday. The first reviews are rolling out, gauging whether the action/RPG will live up to the anticipation generated by a collaboration between FromSoftware and author George RR Martin. At a glance it appears the hype for this project was justified. Here's a roundup:

Looks awesome, but I'll wait for a sale and play it in God Mode. Then it'll be fun to just explore.

I suspect he made an outline for them at the very beginning and that was it. They did say they changed it a lot. If they had to rely on him for edits, well, the game would probably be another few years out.

I've never encountered a boss in any Souls game that took hours to beat... Multiple attempts, sure, and usually the run back from the spawn point takes longer than the actual fight, but if you're spending more than 30 minutes banging your head against that wall, you're doing it wrong. Either change up your strategy or just go level up some more.

Do you have a single fact to back that up?

I don't want to memorize action sequences which you use over and over again nor do I want another Dark Souls III experience. I play game to relax and have fun, not get frustrated at. I can think of far better things to do if you need a challenge.
I won't waste money on this game ever.

I think I'd really like this game, sadly I just don't have the reflexes I once did, so I will probably skip it. I hit a wall in Sekiro I simply could not get passed, and while this game doesn't seem to require the same millisecond timing that one did, these reviews are still all talking about how the reviewer spent 5+ minutes taking out a single boss after hours of attempts... on the first boss. That kind of grind and precision just isn't in me anymore as a gamer.

The reason for this is not age.. but merely you don't hate yourself enough to spend that many hours trying to accomplish it.

You don't need super reflexes to play these, I'm an old man and I beat Sekiro. These are far slower paced and game reviewers are notoriously bad at videogames so just take the plunge. You can always summon help if you can't solo something. The difficulty in these things is highly overrated and people just talk themselves out of it. They are challenging but mostly fair.

Exactly, Sekiro doesn't require reaction time, it requires rhythm. Every fight is a sequence of inputs that you can memorize, to the point where you can play it blindfolded Nier Automata is the same, and so is Dark Souls 3 (not sure about 2 or 1)

I tried Lords of the Fallen before know what kind of game it really was or that it followed Dark Souls gameplay. If I had known beforehand I would of never picked it up. Frustrating beyond all hell was more than enough for me to quit before enjoying more of it's eye candy that it would of provided had I gone further. When I learned more about that, despite the glaring reviews and all the Steam sales for Dark Souls, I said, if that is the standard that all other Dark Soul-ish games measure up to, no way in hell will I try that.

Elden may look good, but it just isn't my type of flavor these days.

Did you try modding DS1 to improve m/kb playability?

Fion food for thought as I'm the same. I use cheatengine speedhack on many single player games and you can map keys to say 70%, 100% and 130% speed. So if something is difficult in an action way, I can press a button for bullet time like effect to make it easier for me to pull off, or say a game with a lot of travel here and there, I hit the 130% button to get to point B quicker. Point is a little tool that can make some things more bearable for you. Overall I use the speed up more to make the games move along faster.
I need something like that for Rogue Legacy.

Dark Souls easy mode: Summon 2 players to kill the boss, $profit. Now sekiro, you were pretty much screwed. No summons and no real build diversity and very limited ability to cheese. Elden ring has magic summons in addition to players. Some of the reviewers said about 80 hours in they were so strong they could one shot bosses.

I don't know, I have seen a lot of videos and reviews and people are saying this is far easier to beat bosses on due to the fact that you can easily leave the boss area and go power up and then come back later and have a much easier fight with more powerful equipment and skills. It looks really cool, so I pre-purchased on STEAM, but then I found out that From can't seem to figure out how to support ultra-widescreen, so I cancelled and bought for the PS5. I do not dig Dark Souls or any of their other games, so you'll definitely hear from me if it is too frustrating, but the world looks SO GOOD. I couldn't help myself.

For those who have never understood the appeal of Dark Souls, Elden Ring’s action is a different story. Thanks, Eye9, that's all I needed to know. Definitely no game for me - as expected. But to each their own, if you enjoy work games like this, go ahead and enjoy.
Same, I'm staying well clear of this masochist game. Plenty of more fun games around and already not enough time to play all of those.

Wait, are you saying this is even harder than the Dark Souls games, (or less forgiving, etc.)? Haha! I guess I won't be in any rush to pick this up until there is a massive sale.
