Out of the Blue

I was very dubious about Xfinity as a provider after moving, but things have gone pretty well so far (knock wood). In fact, I got a present from them this morning, as I was informed that my download speed was bumped by 50% to 300 Mbps and my upload speed is doubled to 10 Mbps in a free upgrade. Ever the nerd, I am quite pleased about this, even though I know the difference will rarely be evident. But I think those of use who lived through accessing the internet using dial-up and modems will always be extra obsessed with high-speed access. I don't think someone who grew up with broadband can ever appreciate that. Sort of the way my grandparents were obsessed with stocking canned food after living through the depression. But you know, just a trifle less dramatic.

I've seen reports that the transition to the NY Times website wiped out Wordle stats. I just played and my stats were there, so this seems to have been fixed.

Oops, but check your settings... I didn't realize until I shared my result here that while the game left Dark Mode on, it turned Hard Mode off.

Ruined seems a bit strong seeing as:

The painting is being restored, the damage, according to the restoration expert at State Tretyakov Gallery, can be eliminated without any long-term damage to the artwork.

Quick question to nerdlers out there.
Do you think it's ok to display the colored squares since the position of the =equal= sign can be easily determined?

A friend of mine asked me not to send him the colored squares because he knew my starter words. I told him to get out of my mind and that I changed my starter words. I also quit sending the colored squares.
My question, "I think he's still in my mind, what should I do?"

I think Xfinity (Comcast) has started to be a little more supportive of their customers now that everyone is dropping cable. I've submitted 3 different BBB issues against them blatantly ripping me off, but of course, the BBB was totally useless. Out of all the companies I've had to deal with over the years, Xfinity has to be the worst. Their dominant control of the wires going to your house is worse than a monopoly. For the past 20 years, my town has no other option when it comes to cable or Internet. You have no choice but to go with Xfinity (I'm sure the city officials get a nice chunks of $$ for that kind of deal). I'll be moving in the next few years and this time I'm going to choose a location that has some competition. Geeze

Yeah, Comcast simply sucks. I finally escaped them when my town's fiber project finally got to my neighborhood in May 2018. Was so happy when I didn't have to give them money any longer.

Just one town over from me has 4 different options for high speed Internet. My town has 1. It's ridiculous, and so obvious that our city officials have worked out a "deal" to not let other providers in (i.e. $$)

My local museum has an original Van Gogh. Some kid poked a hole in it with a pencil. Now it's in a glass case, however I was able to view it before they put it in a case. It was awesome to see the 3D-ness of it, as the paint was layered on quite thickly. A shame we can't have nice things. I'm willing to bet vodka was involved with this damage.

Quite pleased with my xFinity EWAN, too. I have 105Mb/ps down & ~95MBps up. Very reliable. Embarrassed to say how little it costs!...;) Oh, man--how I remember dial up...;) So happy it is a distant memory....! Movies are always immediately dated when you hear that familiar modem squeal-and-squelch handshaking across telephone lines. I recall '98 being the year I moved to broadband cable, and the absence of the ubiquitous modem squeal took awhile to get used to. So nice...;)
It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)

I was utterly amazed at how many paintings of great value were not ensconced behind glass in my tour of the world's great museums. Only the hyper valuable stuff is so protected. And it wasn't so much I was amazed because people might damage them so much as protecting them from the heat and humidity and dust of all the people in said museums. The real annoying thing is how most of the protected works were in reflective glass making it much harder to view or take snaps of because of the overhead lighting.

Btw, I've uploaded all my snaps of Europe to Google Photos. They're not in order or titled properly yet but if you'd like to see them I can upload the links if anyone cares to view Europe and it's art. Here's Venice including my shots from Peggy Guggenheim's museum, including Jackson Pollock's Alchemy because you mentioned you love that piece.

Hey Blue pay the extra 30 bucks for gig speed. I was paying $90 for 300 down and upgraded to 1 gig down 30 up for $120 and don't regret it! The weird thing was that i just checked a box on my account and it happened like instantly. I had to buy a new router but that was only $200 at walmart. I don't even think about bandwith anymore and the game downloads are fantastic if you have a console or steam.

Unless you're constantly downloading stuff, what's the point of gigabit? I'd much rather have an extra $360 clams in my pocket at year end than save a little time on some downloads. Time we have in plenty, dough we do not.

this time I'm going to choose a location that has some competition. Geeze

Centurylink is in over 33 states now. Fiber isn't available in all cities/states but they have an online deal for 1gig fiber for a flat $65/mo. No fees/taxes/added on bs. Just a flat $65 charged each month. Free modem. Free professional installation. Zero contract. Regular cable or DSL internet is even cheaper (although sometimes Centurylink charges a modem fee for that). Meaningful competition is a good thing. 300mb internet-only Comcast cost almost double that after taxes and fees etc. Centurylink also includes unlimited data on all plans.

The only possible drawback is some people have complained about trouble forwarding ports if they want to host a server. Not sure if that's a case of lousy modems or if fiber requires the extra ONT modem to also forward ports. Also, if you live in a DSL-only city, that's mediocre at best.

Countries outside the US often have much, much cheaper internet.
