Out of the Blue

I was very dubious about Xfinity as a provider after moving, but things have gone pretty well so far (knock wood). In fact, I got a present from them this morning, as I was informed that my download speed was bumped by 50% to 300 Mbps and my upload speed is doubled to 10 Mbps in a free upgrade. Ever the nerd, I am quite pleased about this, even though I know the difference will rarely be evident. But I think those of use who lived through accessing the internet using dial-up and modems will always be extra obsessed with high-speed access. I don't think someone who grew up with broadband can ever appreciate that. Sort of the way my grandparents were obsessed with stocking canned food after living through the depression. But you know, just a trifle less dramatic.

My ISP (Shaw) did the same, doubled my 350mbps line to 700.

Then added FREE cell service with $15 data package if you use their broadband at home.

Tough to complain. Dropped my $80/month cell bill.

1mb. crikey. I used to live in the lake district in the UK, basically hills and mountains No broadband but because Mountain rescue services uses 3g/4g we had decent cell towers so the village used 4g wifi, slightly more expenaive overall but the latency and bandwidth were good enough, usually symmetrical too. It rarely dropped below realistic 30mb.

Yeah, back in the 90s we had a corrupt city official who owned the company responsible for connecting these houses, back then, to-be-built houses, since we count as broadband with 16mbit (no joke) we don't even get proper lines laid ever since that is the cut-off for broadband support... lmao. And now my city is bankrupt so fat chance of that ever being fixed...

My 4g connection is, depending on the weather, nearly always faster than my vectored DSL line but got insane caps on it as usual. If there were a rating site for houses I'd give this one -760 of 10 points. For many other reasons, but 100 points at least deducted for forcing me either into DSL unmetered for cable metered. And I refuse to use Vodafone, the scumbags came when I was moving in to force me into a contract that was around 300% more expensive and when I refused they literally went in the cellar and cut the fiber line, I forced them out with threat of police... since then Vodafone is acting like I don't exist, suits me fine, since I think that is one of the worst companies on the planet... grml...

10mb upload? ouch.

Reading this, and having 1mbit upload because of sitting at the back end of a vectored copper line is even more ouch. When I move from here that's going to be my only measure, can I get non-saturated broadband YES/NO. If no, move to next house.

But moving seems like a pipe dream right now with these inflationary costs we are having.

So ya got 50'ish thousand fans having to leave the stadium (OF THE SUPER BOWL GAME) because of terrorists..... do the terrorists understand what sorta hell they are going to unleash on themselves?

They don't care. Ideologically driven terrorists only care about one thing and that is their goal. Anti-government, white supremacists still laud Timothy McVeigh to this day and Islamic terrorists still laud the men who took down the World Trade Center towers. Well most terroristic threats the could pose a problem will be idiot groups like Proud Boys or the Trucking community, or some other idiot group from inside the US (was my point)., and if ya know the die hard fans that will be at the Super Bowl, and surrounding areas, it would be rather foolish to attempt anything at the Super Bowl

People who ask "what's the point of gigabit" are the same people who ask "what's the point of 650 horsepower in your truck". The answer is, if you have it, you'll use it.

I'd much rather download backups for restoration over a Gbe WAN than a 300Mbps WAN. Hell, just verification for received data takes 1/3 the time. Also, if you self-host things, the increased upload speed is absolutely worth it. The mean average of Speedtest.net, Speeof.me, and Fast.com show 980Mbps down and 417Mbps up for my connection and that is about average. It makes using my home connection for a VPN when I am at work or on the road perfectly usable.

For all that, I pay the princely sum of $130 bucks a month to Spectrum.

this time I'm going to choose a location that has some competition. Geeze

Centurylink is in over 33 states now. Fiber isn't available in all cities/states but they have an online deal for 1gig fiber for a flat $65/mo. No fees/taxes/added on bs. Just a flat $65 charged each month. Free modem. Free professional installation. Zero contract. Regular cable or DSL internet is even cheaper (although sometimes Centurylink charges a modem fee for that). Meaningful competition is a good thing. 300mb internet-only Comcast cost almost double that after taxes and fees etc. Centurylink also includes unlimited data on all plans.

The only possible drawback is some people have complained about trouble forwarding ports if they want to host a server. Not sure if that's a case of lousy modems or if fiber requires the extra ONT modem to also forward ports. Also, if you live in a DSL-only city, that's mediocre at best.

Countries outside the US often have much, much cheaper internet.

Hey Blue pay the extra 30 bucks for gig speed. I was paying $90 for 300 down and upgraded to 1 gig down 30 up for $120 and don't regret it! The weird thing was that i just checked a box on my account and it happened like instantly. I had to buy a new router but that was only $200 at walmart. I don't even think about bandwith anymore and the game downloads are fantastic if you have a console or steam.

Unless you're constantly downloading stuff, what's the point of gigabit? I'd much rather have an extra $360 clams in my pocket at year end than save a little time on some downloads. Time we have in plenty, dough we do not.
