Out of the Blue

I was very dubious about Xfinity as a provider after moving, but things have gone pretty well so far (knock wood). In fact, I got a present from them this morning, as I was informed that my download speed was bumped by 50% to 300 Mbps and my upload speed is doubled to 10 Mbps in a free upgrade. Ever the nerd, I am quite pleased about this, even though I know the difference will rarely be evident. But I think those of use who lived through accessing the internet using dial-up and modems will always be extra obsessed with high-speed access. I don't think someone who grew up with broadband can ever appreciate that. Sort of the way my grandparents were obsessed with stocking canned food after living through the depression. But you know, just a trifle less dramatic.

this time I'm going to choose a location that has some competition. Geeze

Centurylink is in over 33 states now. Fiber isn't available in all cities/states but they have an online deal for 1gig fiber for a flat $65/mo. No fees/taxes/added on bs. Just a flat $65 charged each month. Free modem. Free professional installation. Zero contract. Regular cable or DSL internet is even cheaper (although sometimes Centurylink charges a modem fee for that). Meaningful competition is a good thing. 300mb internet-only Comcast cost almost double that after taxes and fees etc. Centurylink also includes unlimited data on all plans.

The only possible drawback is some people have complained about trouble forwarding ports if they want to host a server. Not sure if that's a case of lousy modems or if fiber requires the extra ONT modem to also forward ports. Also, if you live in a DSL-only city, that's mediocre at best.

Countries outside the US often have much, much cheaper internet.
