Blizzard Planning New Survival Game

Blizzard News puts out the call for applicants interested in working on a new unannounced survival game, inviting them "create a new universe with us" (thanks Thermight). There's not much to go by right now, but we can see that it is set in a brand-new universe and will come to PC and consoles:
Blizzard is embarking on our next quest. We are going on a journey to a whole new universe, home to a brand-new survival game for PC and console. A place full of heroes we have yet to meet, stories yet to be told, and adventures yet to be lived. A vast realm of possibility, waiting to be explored.

Every story needs a teller. And every world needs builders. What if that could be you?

For thirty years, Blizzard has been creating universes for millions of players around the globe. This requires a diverse team of developers willing to lend their voices, to listen and to be heard. That is our mission.

Do you like survival games? Do you want to join a collaborative team of experienced developers at the early stage of a new project in a new world...and help write the next chapter in Blizzard's story?

This is your call to adventure. Will you answer it?

Yeah, remember when Blizzard would take game designs and then polish them up into amazing creations w/ deep mechanics.

"Deep" mechanics in a Blizzard game? Thanks for the laugh .

As for monetization, I'd say Blizzard definitely do not need Activision or Microsoft for that. They are greedy enough all by themselves.

Yeah, i was going to same the same thing... but im getting old, so my memory could be failing me lol

I remember Blizzard copying designs, polishing them, then marketing them very well... but deep mechanics? I recall quite the opposite. They usually remove depth to appeal to the mindless masses.

Do people like survival games? Or survival lite games only, where you eat and drink water every so often, wear appropriate clothing, and you otherwise ignore the mechanic. an actual survival game, like "green hell", that is a bit different.

I don't play survival games, how does one monetize them? That is about all you can count on with Activision on this.

That would be microsoft, not activision.

So Blizzard is finally going to put the "craft" into WarCraft.

Or a survival game set in the Diablo universe. Plot twist, you play as Diablo.

Survival games are a dime a dozen and often seem to be the most dominant type of game especially when it comes to the indie scene so they'll really have to do something to separate themselves from the pack and without the classic Blizzard polish which has been absent for some time I can't really imagine what kind of rabbit they're going to pull out of their hat.

It would be neat if they did make it in the Starcraft universe though. That franchise deserves more than being exclusive to a genre which is always on life support.

Let me guess, you land as a female employee in Blizzard's HQ and have to survive? Too soon?

Why a new world? I'd love to see a CE type game in Azeroth. Imagine being able to go from province to province and build a base, look for resources, do dungeons, have thralls, etc.

Edit: Ahh dammit DP beat me to the punch. Haha!

Blizzard survival game: you play as a cute female intern and have to navigate the "frat boy" mentality at the Blizzard offices.

That said it'd be awesome if they took something like Deep Rock Galactic a coop-horde type game and made it Starcraft but with way more
immersion - (I kinda hate wave based games) more survival/infinite gameplay loop with awesome sound design & graphics. More RPG elements like instead of going back to your base, you go back to a huge open-world, no load screens, and travel to the next spot. At this point there may as well be a survival MMO pve/pvp type game.
I guess Mortal Online 2 is sort of like that but I had about 0 fun playing that. I have 12 hours in that game and that was literally just walking around in the wilderness
watching my stamina deplete a million times.

Vets like Frank Pearce, Jeffrey Kaplan, and Chris Metzen helped save Overwatch from disaster because they knew how to do it through trial and error and experience. All of these guys are gone. So the people Blizzard chooses as lead(s) on this new IP won't produce at the same level as these vets. This will lead to massive disappointment because people expect Blizzard to make new IPs at a high level. Also, Blizzard is still owned by Activision, which Microsoft will eventually own. That changes the dynamic.

I like survival games, but whatever game they are making will definitely be a more basic survival game more focused on narrative, like Grounded. Not a sandbox survival game like 7 Days to Die, or Ark, or Conan Exiles, or... the countless others out there. I'd love to see a huge, well-produced sandbox survival game but I don't think that's likely at all.

It will also likely force multiplayer, which means limited base building and a whole host of other issues. I'm curious about this new project, but not hopeful.

A survival game set in Starcraft would've been interesting. Fend off the Zerg with only branches and rocks!
