Pandemic Eradicated from Steam

A post on Reddit reveals that Pandemic: The Board Game has been delisted on Steam, and is no longer available for purchase. This strategy game was released in 2018, so it was certainly not an effort to exploit COVID-19 at the time. It does seems possible the removal is still related to the coronavirus outbreak, but the notice on the Steam Listing is inscrutable: "At the request of the publisher, Pandemic: The Board Game is no longer available for sale on Steam." Those who already own it should still be able to play the game going forward. PC Gamer includes word on the one way to still get this:
Though no official announcement has been made, one player contacted Asmodee support and was told via email that, "We have worked hard over 4 years on Pandemic and withdrawing it from the stores has not been an easy choice. This decision was made with a heavy heart for a multitude of reasons that we cannot disclose." The email also claimed that Pandemic would be leaving the Xbox store on January 31, and Switch by the end of July.

Pandemic is no longer mentioned anywhere on Asmodee Digital's website. A look at the Wayback Machine shows that its page was removed in November or December of 2021. However, one digital version of Pandemic remains—on browser-based tabletop gaming platform Board Game Arena, which Asmodee bought last year. You can play Pandemic there for free right now, and with online multiplayer, something the Steam version didn't have.

That's the problem with infectious diseases, it's a little bit too random and it could.be me or you that gets "culled"

And there's no off switch. You'd want to have a back up copy of the human species on a space station like in Moonraker or on Mars like Musk suggests.

I've already volunteered. I don't have kids - that I'm aware of. And I've got news for you, buddy, you're gonna die, no matter what you do. I've done my part for Zero Population Growth, how about you? It's all random and meaningless anyway. In the end out species is doomed regardless. It all has to end sometime.

I agree, making a board game in 2008 with the name of an event that took on new meaning in 2019, was way too soon.
Few read blues comments much less the comments posted here. The steam game was released in 2018 well before the "too soon" covid pandemic.

I think we as customers are due more explanation than the boilerplate bullshit we got "At the request of the publisher, Pandemic: The Board Game is no longer available for sale on Steam.""

It looks like the only mention of pandemic in the news on this site was when it hit Xbox game pass in July of 2019.

Whatever their reasoning, it seems to be an internal decision. Nobody was asking "them" to stop making it. Maybe it's just "too soon" for "them". Lives are being changed and who knows hows those changes have affected the people who make this game. If I had made a game called pandemic and then my *insert special person here* dies from the pandemic....I may want to pull the plug on it as well. I have no idea, hard to put myself in those shoes.

The digital version of Pandemic suffers a lot from the "foot in both camps" issue, where the mobile version is too unwieldy, the PC version is too simple, and neither is nice. I still had fun with it, and the achievements were good at pushing me to find synergies rather than just stick with my favourite characters.

If I had to speculate, I'd imagine that doing justice to the franchise - adding multiplayer, adding a first class UI, or providing better support for all of the emerging offshoots - just wasn't feasible using this code base.

It's weird that they pulled it for sale only six months after releasing new DLC though. Maybe it is a licensing issue.

They'll be sending out invitations to "Get Bitten" parties while claiming it's no worse than the flu and that only old people get zombified.

And all the zombies end up wearing red baseball hats. For... reasons.

Or big dystopian corporations with hotels and massive theme parks in Florida who only care about profits and influence the media and politicians to play down the issue while keeping business open. If hundreds of thousands of people die as a result, as long as the bottom line is protected that is all that matters to them.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride! - HT

We did not get lucky with covid. the covid problem is far from being solved. There are some generic vaccines in the works, but in a world where vaccines have become political, I doubt any vaccine will ever solve the problem since you will have communities where the virus freely spreads and mutates

Highly suggest everyone listens to How To Survive a Pandemic by Micheal Greger. It is an eye opening compilation of public statements made by WHO and CDC officials.

They're predicting billions of deaths, before a vaccine is created.

Mass culling from time to time are not only good, they're necessary. The Black Death, for example, is what allowed us to move out of serfdom and create an upwardly mobile society, mass education, etc. As the old saying goes, in every cloud there's a silver lining. There's just way too many people on this rock and it's getting worse by the minute.

Last year, Asmodee acquired some sort of digital board game platform. In addition, They just got bought by Embracer Group, so it's probably some plan to release their digital games on their own platform or something.

Most likely this hasn't anything to do with the game's theme; odds are it's a licensing issue.

Asmodee Games (the publishers of the computer game) probably had a license with Z-Man games (the publishers of the board game on which the computer incarnation is based) and the license ran out. Possibly Z-Man Games wanted more money than Asmodee Games was willing to pay, or perhaps Z-Man Games has entered into another deal with some other video-game publisher, or worried that the computer game sales were cannibalizing their board game sales, or whatever. But it's much more likely a business decision, and not because of anybody trying to 'cancel' games about a pandemic because of Covid-19.
