Steam Deck on Deck

A January Steam Deck Update has word from Valve that its first portable gaming PCs are on track to ship next month. The ability to see the verified status of games for the system should arrive soon:
First and foremost, we’re on track to ship Steam Deck on time. Global pandemic, supply issues, and shipping issues notwithstanding, it looks like we'll be able to start getting these out the door by the end of February. You can view your estimated reservation availability window here, in case you've forgotten.

In parallel, work and testing for the Steam Deck Verified program has been underway. You’ll soon be able to see Deck Verified status for a growing set of Steam games. We’re checking four major categories: input, seamlessness, display, and system support. You can learn more about the program here.

Yeah, I'm a little annoyed they are making this 1280x780 (or 800, it's unclear) instead of 1920x1080 at the very least. That's going to make a lot of games look terrible right off the bat, let alone how small the screen is... my eyes may be too old for handhelds now.

I’m assuming that 1080p is more than the current APU can handle if you’re targeting 60 fps and a reasonable battery life. It will be interesting to see what it can do in docked mode, especially with FidelityFX.

You are most likely correct, but a lot of games look like complete trash these days, below 1920x1080. I'd like a handheld option with access to the majority of my Steam games, but I may just be stuck with the laptop option for a few versions of the Steam Deck, it looks like.

It will be interesting to see how how folks use it.

Why would you have it sit in a closet and not right beside your TV on the dock that it will be usable with? In other-words you can use it like a Switch, and also stream a more demanding game from your PC to the Deck, to your 4K TV.

I still have no idea what the point of this thing is but I do hope it becomes a success

I just imagine myself laying in bed playing a few games, or sitting outside on a nice day or something. In reality, it will probably sit in a closet until it no longer charges because I didn't take care of it.

These days I find myself gravitating more towards easy-to-play, simple games over the massive AAA blockbusters or complex games with 100 hotkeys and 90 page instruction manuals. After a hard day of work, I just don't want to learn anything else.

The resolution is too low otherwise I would buy. I'll wait for one that is 1080p or better.

I notice the difference a lot from 720p to 1440p on my cell phone, and screen is a lot smaller on a phone compared to this handheld.

I put the $5 down for the expensive version that won't ship until like next holiday season, so plenty of time to change my mind.
Origin - JStarX7
STEAM - Agent.X7
PSN - JStar_X7
Xbox Live - Agent X7

I put in the $5 preorder, but kind of having second thoughts. Maybe better to wait for all the other people to beta test and find all the bugs.
With them trickling out over months, you can probably sell it for a profit if you hate it

I'm interested...but I am going to pick up one secondhand as I am sure there will be people with buyer's remorse. Then I'll use it as a portable penetration device along with my incoming Flipper Zero.

The orcs and I are getting one. As a thousand year old undead necromancer, I definitely qualify as a weirdo. The orcs and I will let you know how the framerates are for FFXV on the Deck. Cthulhu

I've become more excited about this as it occurred to me it is essentially a vita upgrade. Kind of want to let everyone else alpha test though before I get one.
