Wow, most kickstarters just hang onto the money and fade away when they realize they can’t produce what they planned to.

I'm curious if they are just hanging onto it or if they're investing those $2 million and making bank.

Those were pledges, there never was any money. Kickstarter does not pay out to creators or even charge the backers unless or until a project is successfully funded, and this one was canceled before it was scheduled to end on Dec. 30th. They'll have no problem raising the money again later, though, 'cause those fighting game tourney folks are cuckoo for niche controllers. Although the thing looked so much like a GameCube controller, I'd be surprised if they don't run into another big, red roadblock named NINTENDO if/when they ever do make it as far as production.

Likely they were scared because of the massive amount of orders going way past where they were expecting. Their original partner probably wasn't nearly big enough to handle those orders.
Many kickstarters in that situation push forward and end up with massive delays and a bit of a black eye from the launch with lots of complaints. And that's before the crazy shipping in covid times. They probably figured that wasn't worth it and with that amount of interest hope they will find a mass production partner to go full retail so they don't do it all themselves.
Understandable.
