Out of the Blue

The lull around the holidays is a welcome break since I work year-round, so it's a chance to take it easier. Today the quietness has an additional benefit, as I got sick last night. I woke up in the middle of the night and vomited, and this morning had what we'll delicately call further bathroom difficulties. This is unusual for me, as I have a pretty iron stomach, but it sounds a lot like food poisoning. But MrsBlue and I have been eating the exact same leftovers since Christmas, so it's hard to see how I could get an isolated bout, as she's feeling fine. But I'm feeling much better already too. So I'm not happy at being sick, but it's good that it didn't really disrupt things here too badly. Not exactly a Festivus miracle, but prettay, prettay good.

Prettay Good Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

It looks like this is correct. Apparently the plane's performance with one engine was so sketchy that putting down the landing gear, or even using the flaps, would have dropped it out of the sky. One of the main things investigators will be looking at is why this was, as the plane should have been able to get around with just one engine a lot better than it did. It was being used as a cargo plane and it might have been overloaded. Either way, what a great landing.
That explains why the engine wasn't killed before landing, which you normally would want to do to minimize damage to the engines. That's the thing that bugged me the most when I saw it.

Good video. Both the plane and runway appear to coated in Teflon. Sliiiiiiiiiiide

Holy cow! It's just a show. You'll get over it in time.

Anyway, I agree with Simon Says about how the show got progressively worse in the later seasons (season 4 was the peak IMO) after they ran out of book material, although later seasons did have some really good individual moments and episodes.

My point is that there are actually people out there who expected and wanted a happy ending, and they are not a small number of people. I suspect many are casual viewers who probably missed the first few seasons of the series, only to start watching as positive word of mouth spread about the show, and don't know or care that the books even exist. I know many of these people. When the show didn't end how they wanted, they were upset. After the series finale, most of the show criticism I came across on social media (outside of reddit or forums like bluesnews) was about this, and not the bad writing or butchered characters.

Yep. We're angry because the show's been declining in seasons 6-7, and season 8 turned Dragon Girl evil in about 5 seconds, without zero believable explanation or build-up. We're angry because Arya Stark has plot armor that protects her from falling rocks and she learned to teleport. We're angry because of time warps and sudden Fast Travel. We're angry because all the build-up with the Big Bad Undead Boss ended up with nothing of interest. We're angry because Useless Paralyzed Boy becoming a leader, and everyone just agreeing with it, is fucking stupid. That's why we're angry. Crappy, careless writing that destroys the immersion and all the work that was put into previous seasons to create a believable world.

But it's more convenient for Dinklage to stick to reductionism by skin color, aka casual racism that is widespread in Hollywood. He's even dumber than his character became in season 8.

When Dinklage says that audiences were disappointed in the final season because they "wanted the pretty white people to ride off into the sunset together", I honestly don't think he's wrong about that. At least, I think that's what the more casual GoT viewers wanted, a happy ending with Jon and Daenerys sharing the throne, riding dragons together. For the more critical GoT fan, there was plenty else to complain about but I honestly do think we are in the (loud) minority.

No one thought there would be a "good ending". Anyone with at least half a brain cell knew it from the start.

And it wasn't just last season, as soon as they ran out of source material ( and/or diverted from it ) somewhere in the 5th season ( altho you could argue that in the case of some characters like Tyrion it began way earlier ) the fanfic nonsense began.

GoT has the characters and character development driving the plot, both in the books and the TV episodes with source material. I read the books, I know...

Once the Dumb and Dumber fanfic got in full swing it did a complete 180, the plot suddenly took the forefront with the characters being driven by it and mangled to the point of being unrecognizable. Pretty much everyone felt something was wrong or at least somewhat off and it got progressively worse until the very end when it turned into a pathetic parody of its former self.

Agreed. Or in other words, people didn't get the ending they expected they would. Which is kind of ridiculous if you think about it for 2 minutes. IMO I didn't enjoy the last season as much as the other ones simply because the storytelling/script/acting was so poor and unbelievable. The ending was fine, it's how they got to the ending that I have a problem with.

Did a quick scan of the front page, missed he had posted it. And the lawyers get $20m of the $100m, my calculations were based on $80m.

By my math about $33k each for the 2,365 women. I wonder if they get to write that $100m off on their taxes. Wouldn't surprise me.

Loved that guy.

I forgot to record the Madden film that Fox aired on Christmas - it looked like it was going to be good. I'm going to go search for a re-run right now.

Why gear up?

I'm guessing it was frozen or mechanical failure? Could also be a hydraulics, but I expect a DC3 might have a handcrank.
Those are good possibilities.
Adding more;
There was not enough time to lower the gear.
Lowering the gear would increase drag and they were already at a low altitude.

EDIT
Mentour Pilot (he does thorough incident breakdowns on youtube) said this;
They also decided that this would have to be a gear-up landing. The aircraft reportedly clipped the tops of trees, shortly before the runway. There is a video showing the Super DC-3 as it touches down, the crew trying to keep the working left engine off the ground as long as possible. We can also see that the faulty engine doesn’t appear to be feathered.

Any landing you can walk away from ia a good landing.
