Ready or Not Publisher Split Caused By School Shooting Scenario?

A tweet from a couple of days ago from VOID Interactive announces that Team17 is no longer the publisher on Ready or Not, an upcoming tactics game that will put the player in charge of a SWAT team. This includes no explanation, saying: "VOID Interactive and Team17 have mutually agreed that Team17 will no longer publish Ready or Not. We are confident that this is the right path for the future of Ready or Not, and we thank Team17 for their partnership and wish them great success with their spectrum of games!" NME may have filled in that blank, noting the split was announced very shortly after a Reddit comment from the developer saying "You better believe it’s gonna" in response to a question about whether the game will "have a school shooting mission in the campaign" (thanks Kotaku). A number of comments in the thread suggest it may be risky to tackle such a sensitive topic, though it hasn't been directly confirmed that the comment directly caused the break with the publisher.

America. The country where anyone can buy enough weapons and ammo for "personal use" to equip a small army, but where games depicting school hostage incidents are taboo! Gotta love the inherent hypocrisy in that

Team17 is a British company, not an American one

SWAT teams are American, dummy. Come on keep up!

I can't tell if that's sarcasm, but the company that decided this was not worth publishing was British. So this is a British issue, not an American one. School shootings are. This particular decision is not.

But people whine as if Team17 killed the game, not just decided someone else should publish it.

Common counselor, do they allow you to get away with that kind of argument in court? It doesn't matter if Team17 is from Mars, the game's setting is placed in the US, the game is sold and published in multiple world markets, of which the US is the biggest one. No one is arguing that Team17 has killed the game, yet the only one pretending to ignore the elephant in the room seems to be you.

At the end of the day IF they decided to back out publishing the game because there is a planned school shooting map that will be introduced then how can ya blame them? At the end of the day, you do what's best for the company and the company image (unless you're Activision/Blizzard).

So lets play devil advocate.... DOOM, GTA, Call of Duty have been the poster childs of blame for child violence. Microsoft Flight Simulator was included in the blame for 9/11. If they do produce a school shooting level, and if it has kids that can be shot, it's gonna cause a shitshow of publicity. It'll probably be labeled as a "school shooting simulator", and even the game's title will be a talking point by talking heads on TV.

I can see both sides of the discussion, but I wouldn't want to involve my company with it.
I would heavily doubt said level (or the game at all) would actually have kids that can be shot or appear harmed; that's likely a big "you're banned off Steam" move.

My expectation for such a level would be it's teachers/staff and adult suspects, for :-reasons-: , but it's still a school (or college).

Regardless, happy holidays everyone, and fingers crossed for those RTX 3080 Ti in your stockings! :-)

34 school shootings this year and 92 since 2018. How insane are these stats? That's like 2-3 per month https://www.edweek.org/leadership/school-shootings-this-year-how-many-and-where/2021/03.

I assume these are just the times a gun was discharged and someone was injured, i guess there could be a ton more where everyone ended up safe. I wonder how many of these SWAT was at?

Even playing as the people who are stopping the school shooting is bad now? I would expect that the controversy would be good publicity.

But I guess we live in a world where Even telling people not to use the word "* REMOVED *" gets you cancelled because you said the word.
Looks like the 'Regressive leftists' and the Twitter mobs have spread their voldermort mentality in the real world. You can't even discuss an issue.

Oh no, people disagree with you if you use the word you can't use even though somehow you just used it. Such oppression!

"Don't say that word!"
"What?"
"Don't say it!"
"Huh, what word?"
"Just don't say it!"
"Huh? Tell me what word I can't say."
"I can't tell you what word you can't say, just don't say it!"

That's not oppression, that's pure idiocy.
Sounds like a religion.

It is possible this is the reason but I suspect it is just a convenient cover story and even a form of advertising (for the school level that is).

As a parent I think it is a really bad choice for a game but these are the same team that had "anal stairway" in the game. https://i.redd.it/872ceu1lrmxy.png

This is the same team that spent years on releasing pretty screenshots and "coming soon" type of videos instead of focusing on the important stuff.

This is the team that announced trailers and then missed those release dates by a year.

They clearly are pretty bad at making decisions and are too close to the project to be objective.

Having said that the game looks and plays great. I think that the developers just need guidance and sadly Team17 could have given them it.

It'd be pretty dumb if the existence alone of such a scenario in the game were really the cause for the split.

I mean, it's a SWAT simulation/game set in the US, where there's a school shooting every few weeks. It'd be like not having a scenario involving a South/Central American-linked drug cartel.
