FFVII Performance Issues Theory

The FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE launched as promised on the Epic Games Store. Despite stiff system requirements, performance of the updated RPG has been the subject of a lot of criticism. PCGamesN rounds up these complaints, and identifies a possible explanation. A thread on Reddit discusses evidence from the game's files that Square Enix may have shipped a debug version of the game:
As Digital Foundry’s Alex Battaglia calls it, Final Fantasy VII Remake “is literally the worst AAA release I have seen on PC in a good long time”. Massive stuttering issues, framerate drops, and the lack of crucial graphics settings like anti-aliasing or toggles for pretty much any option to improve performance all mar the experience.

Worse still, these issues may be down to something modders digging into the game’s files have discovered – which is that the build of Final Fantasy VII Remake on PC seems to be a debug version rather than a version ready for shipping. The files refer to the released version as a “PPBC_Development” build when it should be “PPBC_Shipping” for a final, polished release.

The mods on reddit have given that post a "misleading" tag on account of this comment, which points out that there's a lack of debug symbols and other evidence that would normally accompany an actual debug build.

That said, I don't think I've ever paid AUD$115 for a video game before, and I'm not going to start by paying for part one of the remake of a game that I've already played to death.

I do look forward to an affordable definitive edition though... the original has not aged well, even with all of the mods that are available these days.

Yeah it probably was the debug version... except that's ALSO probably the only version they had when it came time to ship. Probably one of those "oh we'll fix it in day 0 patch" things. Except what often happens is that there's too much work for that.

Yeah, this was part of the issue with the price.

So will each chapter have their own price or is it one payment to cover all additional chapters?

wow sucks for the people having issues, I personally been having an amazing experience with everything maxed out; looks and runs great. Been a real treat going back through memory lane again like the first time i played as a freshman in HS.

True, but if they didn't release it in parts, we might be waiting another 10-20 years for the whole thing... I played this on PS4 when it first came out and it's plenty beefy, 30-40 hours not including whatever is new with the 'Intergrade' re-release. Too bad the PC version is a mess, 'cause it's a good game and damned pretty.

It is something I considered buying, but wasn't happy with the price so I decided to wait. Glad I waited...

Reminds me of how the BF2042 launch version was 0.2.1. They're not even trying to hide the fact that it's not complete.
RIP RedEye9. We miss you.
