Tencent Acquires Turtle Rock

Chinese conglomerate Tencent announces it is back for blood, as it has acquired Slamfire, the parent company of Turtle Rock Studios, the developer behind the Left 4 Dead and Back 4 Blood franchises. Terms of the deal are not announced, but presumably it involves money and stuff. Here's word:
Turtle Rock will become part of Tencent, while retaining its independent operations out of Lake Forest, CA, USA, and its existing team will continue to run all studio operations, led by co-founders Phil Robb and Chris Ashton. The acquisition will have no effect on Back 4 Blood, Turtle Rock’s hit multiplayer action game, which is published by Warner Bros. Games.

“We are all looking forward to joining the Tencent family of studios,” said Steve Goldstein, president and general manager of Turtle Rock Studios. “Tencent’s outstanding partners, global reach, deep knowledge of gaming and unprecedented support will help us create the kinds of ambitious games we dream of, while allowing us to retain our autonomy and independent spirit.”

Not all that concerned. Tencent is just buying up studios outside China as investments, and as someone pointed out, considering China is cracking down on 'the evils of gaming' this is probably smart.

They've allowed all their purchased companies to run independently, so far.

This 'fear of China' thing is reminds me how people back in the 80s were running around scared that the Japanese were buying up a lot of US companies and real estate.

As for the game, it's okay. I liked the beta. I can do without the card system, but I understand that it now has a 'classic' mode that eliminates the cards if you prefer. I'm also happy to hear they have implemented character progression in single player now.

It's on my wish list, but I'm not interested until there's as much of a 3rd party custom campaign catalog as there is for L4D2, which is really what made that game so repayable. May pick it up down the road if it goes on sale for 50% off or more, and I can convince my L4D2 friends to buy it so we can play together.

Tencent is becoming the leader in MTX. As far as I'm concerned, this killed any potential interest in Back 4 Blood--not that it was super high after playing the beta/demo. The game seemed fine, but I did not really get into the card mechanics. I mean, good for Turtle Rock, they got their pay day and don't have to take the risks anymore--but as far as content, not super stoked about this.

When western huge companies buy up other companies in the east: This is fair. It is capitalism. They don't have to sell and take the money if they don't want to.

I mean, what is the point?

AFAICT studios bought up by Tencent have retained their employees, hired more, and haven't seen a decline in the quality or variety of the games they produce. Meanwhile studios bought up by EA or Activision or what-have-you tend to see mass firings, title cancellations, pigeonholing into specific genres/IPs, or outright closures.

At this point Tencent is doing everything it can to put as much money in the "western" market so it can be independent of the random whims of the CCP suddenly enacting absurd laws on the Chinese gaming market, and there's been zero evidence of any interference on behalf of Tencent on what their studios can produce/sell in regards to soclial or political themes, and zero evidence of any nefarious information gathering or sharing.

So, what is the point?
