S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Getting Blockchain Items

GSC Game World announces it is also doing the blockchain thing, announcing the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Metaverse, a marketplace for unique items for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl, the slightly overdue shooter sequel. GSC has never been stellar at handling real money, so maybe virtual transactions will work out better. Word is the first drop will involve the opportunity to play as an NPC (as contradictory as that sounds). This will be followed by more a secretive second release. In any event they promise these blockchain items will not effect gameplay:
Beginning in December 2021, users may register for item drops that will evolve into a new gaming feature built on top of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. The first drop will take place via auction and is scheduled for January, 2022. As part of the drop series, the first-ever metahuman will be released and exposed to hundreds of millions of gamers worldwide. In-game, the metahuman will appear as an 'NPC', or a non-playable character. The face of the real owner will be recreated in the game by using photogrammetry technology, resulting in the highest possible level of realism.

The second drop will follow in February with the highly secretive genesis packs. The next drops will be announced on Twitter and Discord.

To add, any S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2-related drops won't influence the gameplay itself or give in-game advantages over other players.

Also, NFTs/Blockchains/whatever Technology else aside, what fucking person wants their face put into a video game, with "the highest possible level of realism" ? That seems horrific.

A studio on shaky financial grounds, adds blockchain to the mix, what better way to cook the books, avoid taxes and stuff the pockets of a few suits at the top while stiffing everyone else.

And fundamentally, there was not even a need to make this a NFT. What they want to do is just... a fan-bonus and could EASILY have been done like that, instead they wanted in that cheap crypto whale source and now they are whaling with an NFT meta-human auction

Also.. I really, REALLY hate the word metahuman

Blockchain is a solution to a non-existent problem. Plenty of other games have sold hats or skins or whatever before this, without blockchain. This is also not going to even be a 'real' blockchain, GSC Game World is going to control the blockchain at all times, and I doubt any customer can peruse the entire record. At any time they can render somebody's model or jpg or whatever utterly useless, either by shutting down the servers or just literally deleting it. Energy costs associated with this.. who knows. It will be additional energy wasted, additional servers used, in addition to the game by itself. Even assuming this is energy cheap, this is just going to be used for money laundering, most likely, with some skimming percentages off the top by GSC Game World in the marketplace they will control.

We're literally watching the dissolution of human civilization in real time; I'm only being slightly melodramatic here.

GG greed, you remain undefeated.

Oh, Steam forums are lighting it up too. this is not going the way the devs hoped it would. They better do some real soul searching and rethink this, or it will be the end of this game. The sales will plummet and pirating this game will take on a whole new meaning.

Blockchain <> cryptocurrency. It doesn't use any more electricity than any other executable. I'm sure the graphics engine uses orders of magnitude more electricity to run the game than this Blockchain implementation.

Read the blurb before jumping to conclusions. Completely optional and no effect on gameplay. Blockchain <> energy wasting cryptocurrency. All in all, its just harmless promotion.

Come on guys, its just for cosmetics! At least, for now anyway. The new loot boxes I suppose.

From the CM "SuperProphet" on the Steam forums:

"I can understand all the disappointment. That's why I'm here, checking the comments and reading all the arguments. At the moment, I'm trying to point out a few things:

- we are not breaking the Steam rules cause we are not a blockchain-based game
- the stuff you may choose is only cosmetics, which has no impact on the story or the gameplay"

In the end, this is cost them more money then they would have ever made from those NFT's
Not to mention how many fans they have now pissed off. I have never seen the forums in Steam so united about one issue like I am seeing now. This is going to cost them more then they could have ever made. and in the end, I still think Steam is going to delist them.
