$70 Forspoken in May

It's come what May for Forspoken, as Square Enix and Luminous Productions have spoken, announcing a May 24th release date for this otherworldly adventure that was previously known by the title PROJECT ATHIA. That is now reflected on Steam, as is the game's eye-opening price, as it's available for pre-purchase for $69.99. The date was mentioned in The Game Awards 2021 Trailer, but this was not highlighted here. Here's more on the clip:
New action-packed gameplay featured in the trailer showcases how Frey’s quest in Athia will take her through a variety of diverse environments where she will learn how to use magic parkour to traverse across the unknown land in a fast and fluid manner, as well as her magic abilities to battle Athia’s dangerous beasts that she will encounter on her journey, including the newly revealed Breakzombies and Jabberwock.

Players were also introduced to a new character in Forspoken—the maddened evil sorceress, Tanta Prav—who is voiced and performed by The Walking Dead’s (TV Series) Pollyanna McIntosh. “It’s been wild playing Tanta Prav and I’m excited for players to meet her and experience her as Frey does: a remorseless, unrelenting powerhouse, full of secrets,” said McIntosh. “I think she will prove to be a ruthless adversary for players as they follow Frey on her journey in the land of Athia.”

Psssh, $70. Get out of here. Looks pretty good, so I guess when it's $20 on sale for the ultra-super-deluxe-game-of-the-year edition I'll get it.

I love that the $94.99 Digital Deluxe comes with the "mini-soundtrack" and a "mini-artbook" meaning they will sell you the full soundtrack for $20 more dollars and a full artbook for $50 more dollars. Wow, what a deal!

I need to finish FFXV first, and Cyberpunk. Is it me or it Cyberpunk just a little too clean? Needs more grime, more cyber, and a lot more punk.

Compounded by the fact that the game is SP with what appears to be a short linear campaign. I hope it's not the case. I wonder if game size complicates that. This game is probably 60GB or more. I want more SP games, but this sparks absolutely zero interest for me.

It's funny to me when people talk about games costing $70 when I distinctly remember spending near that amount for MegaTraveller 2 at Babbage's back in the day.

Hell, if we were just to look at Atari cartridges being $30, then applying what that $30 is valued today, and you'll see that games are still pretty damn cheap overall. With ballooning development costs thanks to increased attention to the medium, I'm seriously surprised it took this long just to get to $70, let alone when $60 became the norm.
Gaming popularity was growing in leaps and bounds, so they were making it up in volume. The market is pretty well saturated at this point, so price is all that's left.

They are cheap today because back in Atari and Nintendo days you had a few new game releases per month, but now you have a few dozen per day. If a game wants to charge $60+ it had better be leaps and bounds above everything else.
Hence the part about "increased attention to the medium"...I mean, you can also argue that development costs (and time) were only a fraction of what they are today.

No worries, it'll be down to $20 about 6 months after release... but it won't get a sequel because Squenix will be rather disappointed it doesn't bring in $1B in gross revenue.

I don't know about your Canadian pesos, but the Australian price is a little out there.

AUD $114.95, which according to a quick google convert is USD $82.45

I don't particularly have any interest in this game, but if I did, that price alone would stamp it out.

In Europe it's 80 EUR in pre-order, or even 105 EUR for the Digital Deluxe Edition.

Goes without saying I'll never buy that sort of game at that price, but that's the new standard for Square Enix - FF7 Remake and this one.

Not even going to mention the price in Canadian pesos.

Given the quality of triple-A games coming out these days, I hardly pay full price for anything anymore (if I buy them at all). I'll typically wait a while for the initial patches, then evaluate. I generally have better luck with indie/early access, considering that they're generally inexpensive and expectations aren't as high. The problem with early access now is that some devs are starting to take advantage of the better developers, by releasing unfinished games and never finishing them
