Ubisoft Unveils NFTs

Shortly after revealing plans to explore the role blockchain technology can play in games, Ubisoft unveils Ubisoft Quartz, a place to acquire Ubisoft NFTs called Digits. To start, digits are only available for Ghost Recon: Breakpoint players, and the first three are being handed out for free. Here's an accompanying Announce Trailer and here's the overview:
Ubisoft Quartz is a new experience for our players, built upon our vision of creating an ever-greater connection between you and the game worlds you love.

It aims at offering you more autonomy and agency when interacting with the in-game items that help you craft your own story.

This is the place where you can acquire Digits, the first Ubisoft NFTs (non-fungible tokens), playable in a HD game and relying on an energy-efficient technology.

41K dislikes, 1.6K likes as of a few hours ago.
It is a shame the YT dislikes system will go completely so even extensions wont bring them back.

I hate the idea of small creators being disliked out of mal-intent, but in this case it sends a strong message to Ubisoft. Not that they'll care I suppose.

Technically we don't own the product. We hold a license to use the product. That's one of the reasons why Steam and other digital platforms don't allow the digital trading of games. The consumer lost a lot once we traded physicality for digital convenience. I don't care either way. I'm just glad I don't have a closet full of game boxes.
Software licensing, as opposed to ownership, existed as the norm long before you could download software rather than buy a disc at a physical store.
I know this. However, software licensing was never truly enforceable before it became digital, hence the ability of people to trade software, games, and entertainment media at will. Digital gave publishers and producers the power to enforce license as ownership. Some have taken licensing a step further with subscriptions. While I like the subscription model for business software (Adobe, Avid) and even entertainment (Netflix, D+, Hulu), I am not a fan of the subscription model for video games.

In before you realize that the thumbs-down on user comments on youtube doesn't actually do anything. Like for real, nothing. It's just a "you" button.. not even linked to any API
That is interesting considering how many YTers ask their viewers to help them by clicking like. They seem to think it helps them, did it used to but does no longer?

No no no.. likes on videos do matter, but the comments can be liked and disliked (or reported) and if you hit dislike on a comment it does nothing. The dislike button on user comments is fake. The like button is very real

Other than the ability to trade outside of the platform, I fail to see how this is different than the skins in Counter-Strike. Which isn't to defend them, so much as say this is the same garbage, only with a different name and a few buzzwords attached. It's even worse, as at least CS:Go has been around for, what, 10 years? More? Buy a $100 skin and you got a decade out of it. For this game, you'd probably get two months. And it was still absurd and stupid in CS:Go.

There's an app for that.
https://screenrant.com/bring-back-youtube-dislike-button-how/

Edit
/snip
However, YouTube is removing the dislike stats from the API on Dec. 13, 2021. Once that happens, the app will use "a combination of scraped dislike stats, estimates extrapolated from extension user data and estimates based on view\like ratios" to show the dislike count on every video, says the developer.

Okay, first -- I didn't know dislikes were being hidden (I generally play little attention to likes/dislikes). Second, apparently you can see them if you want to. How?

UBIsoft, here to remind you that now matter how pathetic companies like EA or Activision are...there's always at least one heaping pile of burning feces that's somehow worse: enter Ubisoft!

Remember when Tom Clancy games had a modicum of self-respect? Then Ubisoft ate everything up and raped the franchise into oblivion. Now we have counter-terrorist units fighting zombies while wearing NFT unicorn hats. The fuck is wrong with this joke of an industry? LMAO!

Hopefully Ubisoft chokes on a bag of dicks and goes bankrupt because of it.

I can't think of what adding NFTs to a games cash shop or loot crates is going to be profitable for Ubi.

Loot crates and cash shops are all about whales chasing digital models and pixels that are worthless out side of the game. These things are already non-trade-able. What does NFT add?

Perhaps Ubi has thought of a way to use an NFT operation to cook their own books even more.

That's what their video hints at, and what I was saying, Ubisoft wants to set up their own version of the Steam Marketplace, where Steam runs the store, and takes a percentage of each 'sale' or 'transfer' or whatever of each transaction that takes place. Valve makes bank off of CS:GO skins for example, Ubisoft wants the same revenue stream, but apparently with more steps? Aside from the buzzword usage there doesn't seem to be much actual benefit to Ubisoft if these skins are NFTs or not, as long as Ubisoft can harvest %5 or whatever on each trade that happens on the store they are going to set up.

I hope that they run afoul of the same legal issues Blizzard had with Diablo 3's real money store, etc. I think the EU has stronger restrictions against this sort of thing? Hopefully Ubisoft gets sued before this thing really gets rolling.
