Funcom's Dune Game Goes NUKKLEAR

Funcom announces more about the Dune survival game that's part of its from 2019 deal with Legendary Entertainment and Herbert Properties to create games based on the classic Frank Herbert sci-fi novels. Word is development is being shared by NUKKLEAR, the German studio behind the recently launched Comanche. This fits with the announcement that the scope of the Dune game expanded as part of a deal with Tencent. Here's word:
NUKKLEAR will be taking on a co-development role, helping to realize the expanded scope of the title previously announced by Funcom. The studio was also recently awarded approximately 1.6 million EUR by the BMVI (Bundesministerium für Verkehr und Digitale Infrastruktur) as part of the “Computerspieleförderung des Bundes” German Federal Government Grant. The grant will be used to support in part NUKKLEAR’s development and production work on this project.

In 2019, Funcom announced that it had secured the rights to make a game based on the popular sci-fi franchise, Dune. The untitled project will take inspiration from Funcom’s most successful title, Conan Exiles, and be an online multiplayer survival game. After investment from Tencent, the Dune project greatly expanded its scope, and NUKKLEAR has been brought on to assist in completing it.

Making a movie about Dune, is as pointless as trying to make GOT into a single movie. It is just too big, deep and layered, 1 to 2 hours is not going to cut it. The latest emo attempt is like watching Hayden Christensen try to play Hamlet. At least Lynch got that Dune was not about spectacle but instead language, dialog and politics.

Funcom, is a very bad joke now. I just hope Tencent thrashes them and the IP into shape.

Before you read 7 & 8, I would suggest reading the prequels, it will helps complete the picture....

Specifically:
The Butlerian Jihad
The Machine Crusade
The Battle of Corrin

Outside the original novel which may be the greatest sci-fi novel ever written, books 5 & 6 are the best in the series, followed closely by 4.

Yeah, I started reading that prequel trilogy, finished the Butlerian Jihad, and had to stop. The writing is mediocre at best, and it feels like they could have compressed those three novels into maybe 1 novel. I get it, the AIs and pseudo AIs were pretty genocide-y, let's wrap it up.

I have 6, 7 and 8 to read or reread still, and I'm in the middle of Neal Stephenson's new novel, Termination Shock. Book 9 (the last novel, Leviathan Falls) of the Expanse also showed up at my house the other day, and that'll probably have precedence over finishing the Dune prequels as well. I may be dragging my feet for awhile on those, honestly.

I'm not sure about these studios, but I was hoping someone would make an open world survival type game based on Dune. I can imagine playing either a Fremen or a House Atreides soldier that ended up in the desert. Of course, a sandworm would be a raid boss. Maybe they will time it to come out pretty close to the next Dune movie.

None of these novels leads me to think a MMO Survival game makes any sense for Dune, but good luck, I guess.

RTS honestly makes the most sense(shout out to old school pre-C&C Dune RTS), either land based or orbital to planetary based, followed by MAYBE a FPS, at a few points in the storyline.

But the movie did really emphasize blade combat, so who knows.

Yeah, but Funcom making a survival MMO isn't gonna get even close. And if they tried to do that that'd be way worse still no?

How would a survival MMO even work? There was only ever one house on Dune at a time and it was typically the strongest or the one that showed it could manage spice production. They typically didn't start from scratch. They assumed the infrastructure from the previous fief. Having a bunch of independent players running around doesn't make sense in the context of the story. Unless the game will be from the Fremen point of view. That might work. But it would only work if players had to work together as the Fremen were forced to survive the elements.

If you guys are looking to avoid games that Tencent has funded in some way you're going to be avoiding a LOT of games.
Tencent has invested in pretty much every major gaming company.

Here are just a few of them highlighted:
Riot Games
Epic Games
Activision Blizzard
Funcom
Ubisoft
Paradox Interactive
Remedy Entertainment

Dang, I need to restart my old game development company so I can try and get some juicy million dollar federal grants.

Instead of yet another pay-to-win MMO, I'd love to see a Dune RTS remake. I'm shocked something like that hasn't been announced yet.
