Star Citizen Passes $400M

With Thanksgiving on Thursday this week will be a little slow. But Kotaku had a brainstorm, and checked on the Star Citizen Stretch Goals Page, the gift that keeps on giving. Sure enough, a new funding milestone has been surpassed, and the crowdfunded space game project has now raised over $400 million from backers. But a decade into development, there's no indication of when to expect the launch of Star Citizen or Squadron 42.

What happens if Chris dies of a heart attack or stroke? He's not the most healthy looking individual.

You can f*** right off with that "believer" bullshit.
I just like to play games, Star Citizen is a game and I find it fun to play. There is nothing else to it.

Did I strike a nerve? How is you having fun playing that disposable alpha trash any way connected to your previous comment about Squadron42? Tell us some more how it needs more time in the oven.

So you can only play the game in the winter?

So if Star Citizen is good and the hundreds of million players join like the Citizens tell us .... global warming will then fuck us all ..... so really Chris Roberts is not just "Saving PC gaming" he is also at the same time saving the whole of humankind by NOT releasing Star Citizen.

Praise be to Christ Roberts!

Yeah... or remember how almost exactly THREE YEARS ago Chris announced that he needed to bring investors on board ($46 million) for the main purpose of Squadron 42 marketing? Right. That was a very credible statement. We've been bathing in marketing, especially of Squadron 42, ever since. One trailer after another... all the physical goodies are about to ship, hell yeah, you can really FEEL how the release is coming closer and closer. ANY DAY NAOW!!11

I remember how that was announced 6-9 months after it happened ..... real open development!

Totally open with the backers ..... like how he was open about Sandi being his wife .....

Sunk cost fallacy.
I know people that play this game and I'm certain this is the only reason they continue to play. They have all sunk around $10k into the game and the only reason to keep playing is to justify that absurd investment and what they think the game will ultimately become.

I played with them a few times and it was basically just chatting on Discord, trying to work around crashes, maybe getting 1 mission in and try to discover an exploit for more credits... all while our PCs were over heating.

This is my suspicion for why SQ 42 is taking so long: once they deliver, there's an example of their ability to deliver quality or not, and more than likely it will be mediocre and people will lose interest in the rest of the project.

I don't think there is any 3D chess going on there, the real reason is much simpler: Squadron 42 is just not done yet, and has quite a bit to go.

Seeing how the technology behind Star Citizen was completely changed in 2015, I think they pretty much chucked everything up to that point in the bin.
The single player Squadron 42 is built using the same platform as the Star Citizen MMO, so progress is very tied to that.

The Star Citizen Church is booming... it seems. It reminds me so much of the televangelists of the 80s and 90s. Whatever. It is the money of the believers, and if they want to give and give and give and give and give and give, let them. As long as it is not my money. I think that Genesis nailed the idea back in the 90s.

If this game came out, the abundant supply of pre-purchased ships would break the game's economy and quickly establish predators who prey on the weak, powerful gangs and monopolistic corporations, causing many to stop playing. Roberts doesn't appear willing or able (or probably doesn't care) to address this cursed problem. The issue of broken fair play is baked into the DNA of his game, and it started with ship purchases, which is why most ask, "Where's SQ42?" However, SQ42 doesn't make CIG money... hence a vicious cycle.
