GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition Still Unavailable on PC

The Rockstar Support Twitter remains surprisingly silent in light of how Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition remains unavailable to play or purchase for PC gamers. This is three days after it was "temporarily" taken offline for maintenance, which has reportedly been met with patience and understanding. There is a little more to know about the failed launch of the remastered RPG anthology though. Amid rising customer dissatisfaction, VG247 reports that demands for refunds are rolling in. Similarly, VGC notes that the review bombing has begun in earnest, and the game's user score on Metacritic is currently 0.6, just barely edging out John Blutarsky's GPA. And since when it rains, it pours, a report on Kotaku notes that Take-Two occupied some of its time during the game's launch to send out additional DMCA notices to remove more GTA mods and fan projects. Here's an interview with some GTA modders who no longer seem interested in doing unpaid work for the benefit of Rockstar and Take-Two with all that's gone on.

It's a small studio with few resources. How could they ever afford to do this?
A small studio was contracted to do it. R* and 2K could do exactly this.

I think he was referring to takedown and made the comment in jest, at least how I read it.

Though it looks like the people saying it was just a quick upscaler/smoother was right. Everything was auto smoothed and released. Even things meant to be sharp.
Fair enough. In regards to auto smooth. Yes I believe it. I already read somewhere that they used AI upscaling for the graphics too. So why wouldn't they just go an smooth everything too?

Because you can't do that to an asset pipeline with LOD's already made and rigging already in place for games made decades ago with 20k or more assets Things are supposed to align, old texture and shades only work on single surfaces etc. are maybe tiled this or that way with old trickeries... the moment you smooth the meshes you ruined your entire asset database because bone IK limits get broken.... it's a thing... that nobody with a brain does.

That was a rhetorical question. =)

If you would have never bought it - then why pirate it? I know it was better back in the days of demos - no doubt about that. But nowadays, I just watch some gameplay videos on Youtube and then I know if this game is for me or if it is a bugridden mess that needs to burn in hell. No need to pirate it.

No. If there is no lost sale, there is no monetary damage. Without monetary damage, the argument that the behavior is immoral or unethical becomes very shaky at best. You could argue there's some social contract that you're not allowed to enjoy for free what someone else has to pay for, in the interest of fairness. But I think that falls apart when examined from a Consequentialist standpoint since unless you're running around bragging to everyone about how you got a game for free and they had to pay, that "unfair" behavior is essentially invisible and doesn't harm anyone elses enjoyment of the game.

Someone who would have otherwise not gained enjoyment from the game, due to unwillingness to pay or inability to pay, gets to have some fun and there is no apparent impact to anyone elses enjoyment. Again, this is from a Consequentialist viewpoint where ultimately the goal is to maximize positive outcomes while minimizing negative outcomes. There are other philosophies that place more weight on intention, rather than tangible effects on the world.

With some additional negatives. Notably, these days most piracy is peer-to-peer, meaning you're helping someone else get the game. The other being the continued push that "piracy is swell, only losers buy," which encourages more piracy, which encourages lesser games.

But why is someone playing something they wouldn't have purchased, at any price? There are a billion games out there, most can be had for $5 at some point. Why in the world would you play something that isn't worth even $5 to you?

Unless you're not some super intelligent genius, and just a guy with no friends and enormous amounts of free time?

Ok, just take other peoples work and give them nothing.

It's not like they are owed anything.

as if loyalty is rewarded in this industry and the same people work on the next game instead of being moved around or terminated. they got their money, they don't participate in any financial success and by pirating you only damage the publisher.
i pirated a lot back in the day, didn't do it for at least a decade or even longer. i wouldn't even know if you are able to pirate games nowadays. as such i can't imagine that there is a big vibrant scene involved and that many people really pirate.
