Oneal's Departure Hits Blizzard Morale: Report

PC Gamer attempts to gauge the outlook at Blizzard Entertainment following yesterday's news that Jen Oneal is stepping down from her post as Blizzard co-lead. Unsurprisingly, morale took a hit based on the news, offsetting some of the positivity prompted by word last week that the company is ending its policy of forced arbitration for sexual harassment and discrimination claims. Here's a bit of the takeaway from discussions with unnamed sources within the company:
However, the news that Oneal is stepping down as Blizzard co-leader just three months after taking the role has "killed" any morale boost from last week's concessions, according to that employee. Oneal and Mike Ybarra replaced former Blizzard boss J Allen Brack, who exited in August in the aftermath of the California lawsuit. With Oneal's resignation, Ybarra is now Blizzard's sole leader.

For some, Oneal's leadership was one of the best reasons they had to believe in a better future for Blizzard. They're now left wondering why Oneal would choose to leave so quickly, leading to speculation that something isn't being said.

Never played Diablows, or Overtwats, or Hemeroidstone. Starcraft was OK fun. WOW was OK fun until it jumped the shark with Warlords of Draenor and every expansion since. I thought I might give Diablows a try recently, looked at videos of that game and also Torchlight I and II. Torchlght looked better and that is what I choose, it was fun, so I have no desire to play something crude in comparison.

To me it has always been the source for the best CGI promotional trailers in the business, but with games that were awful me-too junk: Warcraft (chunky more cartoon-y Myth) and early Starcraft an outright C&C clone.

Their big money makers Overtwats and WOW are teetering on the edge of an obsolescence death spiral.
Given the corporations past actions, anything new, original and fun coming out of that environment is doubtful, so yes, this could be the beginning of the end there.

Wow, someone who never played D2. That's rare.

โ˜๏ธ๐Ÿ˜… Here's another one. Not sure how I skipped this game but the theory goes it's because I found a new interest in FPS games and suddenly had a backlog. I also remember I always believed D2 looked ugly AF even at release. ๐Ÿคท

Overwatch was good, whether you liked the game or not. They need to get their shit together, but I don't think you just get to skip any title that hurts the narrative you want to build.

Overwatch was boring. I'd take Enemy Territory over Overwatch any day.

Yeah, because sex scandals and bad HR management has brought down Billion dollar companies before. I'm sure that all the millions of idiotic manchildren will all refuse to buy Diablo4 and Overwatch 2 as a result of this. /s

Yeah sucks. I hate to support a terrible company but I want Diablo 4! lol. What to do? Perhaps I can pray that it sucks and gets terrible reviews. Then save myself from having to give Blizzard another dollar. On that note however, I am part of the problem. I did purchase Diablo 2 Resurrected and have been having a blast with it. Perhaps I can just say, I'm supporting the memory of Blizzard North?

If you are going to avoid every company where these kind of things happen, you are not going to buy much anymore (and I'm not just talking about games either)

Think about that. Yeah, no, the games you're thinking about weren't good. They were released, but not good. Overwatch was the last game I bought and I regret buying that. Zero chance I buy Diablo IV, despite it being one of my favorite franchises of all time. Still hurting from the colossal failure that Diablo 3 was and is. Would have loved to buy D2R but it was easy to see the smoke of the fire there. I wouldn't give Blizzard another dollar until they release at least two FANTASTIC games back to back with no server issues. And THEN and ONLY then, will I think about buying the game that follows those. No chance they save this sinking ship. No matter how much money they throw at it.

Reaper of Souls.
Diablo 3 is very good, today. It became "good" with Reaper.

Like Diablo 2 before it, it took an expansion and some time to make a good game out of it. Diablo 2 classic was poor (and had insane server issues for over a year). Took over 3 years till v1.10 for Diablo 2 to become the game everyone refers too as "Diablo 2" TODAY when comparing games and genres; the holy grail of APRGs. Anyway, gonna go run Meph for the 900th time this week, because that's fun while simultaneously making fun of Diablo 3's endgame /s

I wouldn't worry too much about it. At least you're not being a hypocrite about it. I'm having fun with D2Resurrected too. It's a blast. No wonder people were having some high hopes for Blizz, since from what I've read both Oneal and others from Vicarious visions were tapped for some leadership roles at Blizzard. In any case, we are all fooling ourselves into thinking we know even 5% of what is going on over there, of the real reasons for any of these people are leaving. For all we know, she left for purely selfish reasons too. Speculating about all of this is fun maybe for like 5 seconds, but if you think about it, no one really gives a shit. Not really.

Let's give every company we buy from a thorough background check from now on... Right? ๐Ÿคน๐Ÿป What a circus. Few nerds in power were exploitative idiots. Fix it and get over it. I'm still not past worrying about child trafficking/pornography to give a single shit about Blizzard. Just give me Diablo 4 already!
