id Hiring for "Iconic Action FPS"

ZeniMax Job Listing for a Senior Technical Animator for id Software seems to reveal unannounced plans for a new installment in one of id's core franchises (thanks PCGamesN). This is to support "the development of a long-running iconic action FPS." The roster of game's created by id has more than one candidate to fit this. There's the Wolfenstein series, DOOM, Quake, and arguably Rage. Here's what the listing says about the position:
id Software, part of the ZeniMax Media Inc. family of companies, is seeking a Senior Technical Animator/ Character TD to join our team in our Richardson, TX studio (near Dallas) in the development of a long-running iconic action FPS. This position will be responsible for the implementation of AAA quality animation rigs with a focus on Havok cloth and hair implementation. Working in coordination with the Concept, Modeling and Animations teams, applicants will be tasked with creating hair and cloth rigs to be used in both gameplay and cinematics. Candidates should be self-motivating and demonstrate strong technical, design, organizational and scripting skills.

I hope it's a new quake or quake 2 inspired project.
Q2 sp was ok but q2 mp was fricking fantastic.
The new Dewms felt more "quake with doom enemies" than actual doom.
That said I actually liked the platformer influences way more than I though I would--less so the swing bars and moreso the firechains and donut paltforms.
Though I still prefer the mazes with sprinkles of enemies than arena-corridor-arena-corridor recipe

My thoughts exactly! Think i must have played through Quake Co-op on nightmare difficulty with 6 or 7 different mates, each one was an absolute blast...

And Quake World... was probably my best multiplayer gaming experience to this day.

I haven't even tried the new Dooms, they just don't appeal to me at all. Though i will say i bought my first PC (486 dx2 66) after seeing Doom 1, so i should give it a little bit of credit

The originals emphasized fast and dynamic maneuvering in a 2d plane as a combat tactic; the new ones emphasize fast and dynamic maneuvering in a 3d environment as a combat tactic. Since dynamic 3d maneuvering is a core mechanic, it stands to reason that you would have some maneuvering based challenges to pace the combat and exploration. The “platforming” isn’t even hard or punitive (I think I had like 3 platforming deaths in my run through the game); it’s just there to add some variety.

I'm with you. It was basically there to teach you fight skills, as dashing and double jumping saved lives.
Doom 2 had a huge flaw of too many currencies, but was otherwise a ridiculous blast

Good for you, I spend tons of time retrying some of the jumpcrap after falling down each and every time, granted it usually did not result in death, it just put me back where I was.

At one point I went to check on youtube to see if I was doing a certain part wrong as for the life of me I could not get trough it, I was right, but still always seemed to come up short from where I had to be. I do not play first person shooters for this kind of platform crap.

I stand by my statement that while DOOM Eternal might not be a bad game, it is a terrible DOOM game and should have been released under a different IP.

While I enjoyed the gameplay and soundtrack of Doom Eternal thoroughly, it didn't have a "doom" brand to me. It's like a single player campaign of Quake 3, wrapped in Warframe graphics, and some weird purple alien kings?(I think?). And that mario platforming yikes. Luckily the slick movement and combat was too good to not play.

I just really loved the tone of the first 2, and somewhat 3 games. Gritty, metal, punk, satanic. The brutalist concrete and steel buildings. That's something I love about those 80s sci fi movies too, the dirty future where the air always seems to have a mist to it. It's a future I never want to live in, but it makes for a fun game world. Maybe artists are tired of doing that, hence the future looks like an apple store in most sci-fi's now.

Bleh, cloth and hair? How are you going to see that underneath the player's space helmet, and body armor?

I'm of course interested in whatever game eventually gets made, but id has kinda been all over the place, game design wise, if not quality wise, the past couple of games. I feel like Doom Eternal just isn't fun, even compared to Doom 2016, for example.

I would go for Quake as well. I liked all of the entries in that series, even Q4. Quake Champions was fun for a while, to scratch the itch for Q2/Q3 dm. I would ride the current Doom wave if I were at id, but as a fan I would love a new Quake game.
