BlizzCon Being Paused and Reimagined

Blizzard announces the global BlizzCon event planned for early next year is no longer taking place as previously thought. This was announced earlier this year when the cancellation of BlizzCon 2021 was revealed. This is said as a way to keep focus on supporting their teams and game development at this time. But this also says the event is being reimagined for enhanced safety and inclusiveness when it returns:
We’ve decided to take a step back and pause on planning the previously announced BlizzConline event scheduled for early next year. This was a tough decision for all of us to make, but it’s the right one. Any BlizzCon event takes every single one of us to make happen, an entire-company effort, fueled by our desire to share what we create with the community we care about so much. At this time, we feel the energy it would take to put on a show like this is best directed towards supporting our teams and progressing development of our games and experiences.

Additionally, we would also like to take the time to reimagine what a BlizzCon event of the future could look like. The first BlizzCon was held 16 years ago, and so much has changed in the time since—most notably, the multiple ways in which players and communities can come together and feel like they are a part of something bigger. Whatever the event looks like in the future, we also need to ensure that it feels as safe, welcoming, and inclusive as possible. We’re committed to continual communication with our players, and we see BlizzCon playing a big role in that going forward. We’re excited about what we’ll do with the event when we revisit it in the future.

One more thing we wanted to make clear: even though we aren’t holding BlizzConline in February, we’ll still be making announcements and updates for our games. We’re proud of our teams and the progress they’ve made across our games. We have a lot of exciting upcoming news and releases to share with you. You’ll continue hearing about those through our franchise channels, with the talented people on the BlizzCon team playing a part in supporting these efforts.

We’ll miss seeing you, but don’t worry. We’ll be back together soon.

In the early years if it hadn't required a flight I might have tried. But in the past decade, yeah -- not at all interested.

As I wrote elsewhere, I'm not surprised at the cancellation. Trying to have multiple big announcements on a yearly basis isn't easy for Blizzard, historically. They are lucky they have one good, big announcement a year. From a PR perspective it is better to announce things when they get the biggest hit instead of trying the 'annual results' method.

Another thing, Blizzcon seemed to be more of an ego-boost for the developers than necessarily a fan outreach/appreciation event. Given all that has come out, it's better from a PR perspective to not put the devs under that microscope. Any mistake or non-mistake-that-gets-blown-out-of-shape would be a PR disaster. Blizzard already has enough self-inflicted wounds. They don't need to potentially add more.

Reimagined meaning "please don't come to the show and try to put us on blast about our bad behavior" ...

They'll probably keep it online-only going forward. It allows them much more control over the Q&A and their exposure, when and how the panels go, and there's no pressure on the staff to work long hours prepping for the live event. Overall I think those are good things.
Never been to one myself, partially due to the cost but also because I don't enjoy being in as loud and crowded an environment as BlizzCon was.

The one thing that online only loses is players/fans meeting each other in person, which from what I can tell was a major part of why those players/fans enjoyed BlizzCon. And unlike the memes, it wasn't about getting laid for the majority of attendees, it was about celebrating various franchises people loved with other people who felt the same way.

Well, so long as it's "inclusive as possible" that's all that matters. Who cares if it's egalitarian or not so long as Bobby is making his fat bank and everyone else is living in poverty.
