Yeah, where once there were 20 companies with their own AV engines, now it's moving towards just 3-4. I think AVG, Avast and Avira all use the same AV engine now? And Norton as well I assume.

I have been bouncing back and forth between AVG, Avira and Avast the past 10-15 years or so, and they have all gotten much more annoying with ad spam. Still, the seem to consistently perform well on av-comparatives, although it looks like McAfee and Norton are actually doing better since September? I'd hate to have to drop Avira and go back to Norton or McAfee though, I have an irrational hatred of those two.

I've tried that logic the last 5 years with Steam and it didn't work. The Halloween and Thanksgiving sales were better than Christmas, iirc.

Devil's Advocate: Just because a lot of game based AV detections are false positives, it doesn't mean every AV detection is a false positive. Steam isn't infallible, and it would not surprise me at all if some cheap asset-flip games on Steam actually have viruses or other malware (crypto miners probably) in them.

Are your particular games in this latter category? No idea, but it's not going to hurt you to google their names and check if anybody else is getting DEFINITE false positives on Avast, which is a major AV with tens of millions of users at least, so surely somebody else will have reported this to Avast or even the Steam forums of those games.

For the record, I am using Avira, which hasn't had flagged any games, especially retail games I bought through Steam/GoG/Origin/Epic/Battle.net/UPlay pretty much... ever? Some mods, even from Nexusmods, sure.

But Steam doesn't give a royal f@ck.

You know all this stuff is checked for viruses before they put it on the store.

A couple years ago Norton was triggering on a file in Black Mesa. It wasn't a virus.

No. Then again, I don't use Avast. I wouldn't trust an AV product as far as I could throw it. Most are useless garbage designed to be reactive and the proactive ones are guessing at best. A better, more proactive set of behaviors would have an immutable OS, separate home folder, and sandboxed applications

A quick DDG search shows that to be a fairly common occurrence with Unity based games and are false positives.
