Out of the Blue

Well, it's a weather extravaganza in the US, as the east coast is being battered by a nor'easter while the west coast is dealing with a bomb cyclone. The bomb cyclone, or explosive cyclogenesis, is described as record-breaking, which is certainly scary. Hopefully everyone affected is staying safe. Though it's a little on the early side, our nor'easter (the official weather pattern of Talk Like a Pirate Day) is pretty typical of storms that hit these parts a few times a year from late autumn through winter. They can be dangerous and often morph into bomb cyclones as well. Interestingly, they are noteworthy for being particularly hard on the northeast, but that is not where they derive the name, which comes from the wind direction during the storms. Anyway, that all makes it sound more dramatic than it is for us right now, as after some thunder and lighting overnight, we're now just dealing with a steady rain. With some luck, things will turn out equally undramatic for everyone on the paths of these storms.

What a shame.
He didn't renege. That article quotes him making off-the-cuff cracks in the moment. That's not the same as presenting new material developed off the stage for a premeditated set.

Well, billionaire is a stretch, but 50 million? He got paid that much just for reruns of Chappelle Show, from Comedy Central and HBO. He got paid like 25+ million per special for Netflix. Anyway, the point is, his wealth is outside the realm of 'regular' people.

Doubt he is a billionaire, although I suppose it is within the realm of possibility based on the report he got paid $200m by Netflix and someone else (Sony?). Whether he is or isn't doesn't matter much.
Unless he is a financial idiot or is being robbed blind by his handlers he won't be worried about supporting himself any time soon.

Somebody is always going to demand something. Chapelle acting like anybody is actually going to act on those demands is what's ridiculous. He's probably a billionaire at this point, and has the major media companies kowtowing to his demands, literally.

Wow, Dave Chappelle has kind of turned into a version of Seinfeld. He's so rich now he doesn't even get regular peoples' struggles, and his jokes are really starting to reflect that lack of understanding.

Cancelled? He fucking started a social media campaign to bully SONY and HBO into paying him more money for the Chappelle show, and it fucking succeeded. He just got paid like 200 million dollars or something for five Netflix shows, that are still available to watch. He literally smoked weed with the Governor of Ohio and didn't get arrested, although weed was still illegal in Ohio at the time. It goes on and on.

Imagine saying "well my black friends don't mind when I say this, so clearly I'm not racist!" He's doing the same shit for his transgender jokes. Only his one transgender friend is dead now, after suicide from harassment, literally after one of his shows. Let alone mocking the rising violence against Asian Americans the past few years. Let alone encouraging people to not wear masks during the pandemic. I used to be a huge fan of Chappelle, I can't even stand his fucking 'woe is me' act now. He's practically wiping away his fake tears with thousand dollar bills.

"Am I cancelled!?" To cheers and applause in a large packed auditorium, that's been shared online to literally billions. "Oh, and I won't talk to transgenders except at a time and place of my choosing!" What a fucking prick, lol. Humanity is just shitting the bed, the past couple of years.

Yeah, as I said, I think they are okay -- however, I'm willing to admit it is probably heavily influenced by what they follow. The original novel shines so brightly, books two and three can not help but seem dimmer in comparison...

All of those minor character interactions are arguably more interesting than Super Paul, and definitely better than Super Worm Emperor later, in my opinion. But yes, so much more goes on in the novels that won't ever make it into the movies.
Super Paul? I'm not sure what you are referring to there. Paul as The Preacher? Super Worm Emperor I assume is a reference to Leto II in book four. Lots of deep character interactions in that book so I'm not sure why you have more problems with it than the others.

Well Paul = Super Paul, as he is basically unbeatable in combat, has Mentat and Bene Gesserit abilities, and the most expansive Voice powers of anybody in the series. Stuff eventually happens to him of course, but even so. I personally just find the more human (or at least less... min/maxed?) characters more interesting, for most of the series. I wasn't bashing the later books, I was saying I didn't personally find the second and third novels to be particularly weak, or just weaker, as I was interpreting you to be saying.

Maybe that sounds outlandish, but after just seven years of daily meals at the theme park, Dylan paid down his student loans, got married and bought a house.

Well that won't count for much after his stroke and/or heart attack after seven years of eating fast food every day. I'm honestly surprised he's not dead yet. I'd imagine he must be absolutely enormous.

The fighter he defeats (Jamis) is not one of their best. This is made clear in the novel. He is even given "inside information" about Jamis' tendencies by Chani. Paul has been trained his entire life in combat not only by a Bene Gesserit but by excellent, well trained professional soldiers. He is a feudal heir who is expected to be good at combat because his life may depend on it.

"The Sardaukar are the most feared troops in the galaxy!"

Duncan Idaho kills 20 of them.
Just because they are feared and good, doesn't mean they can't be defeated. It is part of the mythos of the novels -- Idaho is the best of the best. And yeah, the Sardaukar are good and well trained -- so were alot of the guys who walked into a ring with Mike Tyson.
Yeah, I didn't think either of these things came out of the blue. They laid the groundwork to make both scenes believable. I just thought the dichotomy between the action and the dialog was funny.

That sounds more like persuasion than tact. Tact is mainly about not giving offense. In case it wasn't obvious my nickname (and yes, IRL friends know me as Mr. Tact) is sarcastic. I have several ex-girlfriends who would gladly testify to my lack of tact.
