Out of the Blue

Welp, the gremlins managed to get in and strike overnight here at the Blue Tower. When I awoke this morning I recalled there was an early NFL game in London. So I popped on the TV to see what was up while I brewed some coffee. Minutes later I looked up to see that the screen was displaying a psychedelic pattern that would have been a perfect background for a Jimi Hendrix concert. There's not a lot to check in a situation like this. I played around with the inputs and tried the old power cycle hoohah, but it seems the TV has lost the ability to translate electrical impulses into coherent images, which is basically its only job. And on a football Sunday, no less! Not to mention the season premier of Succession tonight. I'll play around with the TV a bit more to see if there's some sort of "fix picture" function I'm missing, but I'm pretty sure it's just destined for the landfill and will need to be replaced.

The Round-up Will Not Be Televised

If you are feeling handy, maybe check out shopjimmy.com. I had some issues with my TV, got some parts off them, watched a video, and managed to fix the thing in about an hour. Obviously, your mileage may vary, but it's a lot less expensive than a new TV, and less stuff going to landfill.

That's exactly right. There's a ton of streaming services both free and paid you can get the clients for and Roku handles it seamlessly. Most of the free stuff is fairly ghetto but they always have some gems. Your mileage will vary on the paid ones. Over winter I usually pay for a few services like Acorn, BBC, and Wondrium. The 4K stick is 50'ish US and the soundbar $100'ish. Easily worth it IMO.

Had a TV years ago, didn't use it, finally gifted it to family.
Wanted a small backup monitor, bought the only model "small" enough available, has TV capability and never used that.
Collected hundreds of movies and series through the years, but stopped.
Can't get the interest to see even the tiniest fraction, finding so few of them as entertaining as games.

I've got a Samsung 4K TV that has been neutered, by me, so that everything routes to 127.0.0.1. No ads, no datamining, nada. I tried not setting up the network in it but then it would just automatically connect to whatever open WAP it could find. So, route to host it was and that fixed the issue.

I feed it via a Raspberry PI 4B 4GB running LibreELEC, and therefore Kodi, with a Plex plugin.

Yep, the Roku sticks are worth it. The Roku soundbar is definitely worth it IMO. Again, I tried a Sony soundbar with this TV which was almost 3 times as much and the Roku soundbar was far superior IMO. Unless you're a high-end audiophile it's perfect for everyday TV as well as sports and movies. Plus you get Roku and the ability to add a million apps and streaming channels.

Yes, indeed. 'Dumb' these days is "good"...;) I'm strictly a component buyer myself--it's so much fun to put together nice component systems and have everything working as advertised or expected! Honestly, I never liked multifunction stuff even 30 years ago--never did. That early judgement appears to have been sound...;)

Blue--I'm sure you've tried replacement cables, if needed, eh?

Stay the hell away form Sony. I'll never buy anything else from them again. You can't use half the features on the TV unless you consent to them dataming you out the ass. They're also overpriced relative to picture quality. And they've intentionally gimped the online features so if you want a certain app like a VPN, good luck with that. They only allow you see what they want you to see. And it's all tied to Google datamining. I imagine Samsung and LG are the same.

Bought a TCL Roku TV for the bedroom and it's so much better all around. I actually had to buy a Roku soundbar for my Sony because I couldn't access Roku and all the other streaming channel services any other way. So my rec is for TCL.

Sony used to make really good stuff, on about 20-30 years ago, that is. When CRTs were king, Sony Trinitron monitors were very nice--for a CRT--last one I owned was a 20" Flat screen CRT Trinitron RGB monitor for 1600x1200 native--back in the '90's. Bought it direct from Sony California and it was drop shipped to me on the east coast direct from Sony USA for $600--which I thought was a steal at the time...;) Had no complaints, but after I bought my first LCD monitor a bit later I had no trouble understanding why CRTs obsoleted by LCDs. None! Haven't owned a Sony product after that until I bought the Sony x700 4K & BluRay player early this year--and what a mess! I have no axe to grind with Sony, I'm just surprised by what's happened to the company. I could not use the x700 for Streaming because it kept constantly locking up--couldn't watch just a standard BluRay disc without at least one lockup. In short, it was just about worthless! I mean, really substandard. The Sony BR disc player I bought before these latest additions (x700) was fabulous --never locked up once in streaming or with discs! Bought a 4k Panasonic UB-420-K , I believe was the designation--and it's been like night and day! Lockups? What're they?...;) Not kidding--I've never seen so much product differentiation!

So, I use the Panasonic for disc movies--bought a ROKU Ultra for my 4k HDR10 TV for 4k streaming exclusively--never had the first lockup! Love that ROKU. Cannot say enough good things about the Panasonic UB-420-K (and I'll say do not buy the Sony x700!)...

Just thought I'd reply as I don't know what has happened with Sony, either. After the 90's it seems like a much different, much inferior company.

same here. we opted out of a smart TV and use an intel NUC powered kodi box instead. HDMI injection means the same remote, all our streaming and catchup have plugins.

With the samsung ones you are at the whim of what they wish to support from i
one month to the next.
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Yeah, it has gotten to the point where I can't even take watching center left reporting on the GOP. Just hearing what those clowns are doing nearly makes me want to go on a killing spree. Reports on the Ds is less terrible, but not pain free. So, I pretty much just read headlines and occasionally skim a story. Any more and I can just feel my blood pressure going up...

News avoidance during the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with better mental well-being

Or you could copy my mother and just plug into Fox News 24/7 and grow increasingly deranged to the point where you don't care about anything because Jesus is apparently returning soon to call home only Fox News viewers. I don't even speak to my own mom anymore because every time she calls it's just non-stop regurgitation, and you can literally hear Fox News on in the background no matter what time of day she calls.

I consider myself a somewhat political person and I only spend about an hour on news stuff a day, none of it on TV. It's just nightmarish to consider the idea of watching more.
